Harmony Hub
Cultivating Unity in an Interreligious Dialogue Center through Transcultural Architecture and Sacred Architecture
This pre-thesis explores the concept of critical regionalism in architecture and examines the challenges of promoting interreligious understanding and social cohesion in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Street of Harmony, a complex of eight historic religious buildings, exemplifies religious coexistence in the region. Despite the coexistence, contact between religious communities is marginal, suggesting that opportunities for social cohesion and cross-cultural awareness remain to be fostered.
To address this issue, this pre-thesis proposes the establishment of an interreligious dialogue centre to serve as a dynamic hub for intensive dialogue between different religious communities. The interreligious dialogue centre aims to promote unity and interreligious dialogue through the use of sacred and transcultural architectural elements. The research adopted a mixed-methods approach, using both qualitative and quantitative methods, including stakeholder interviews, case studies, and field surveys to influence the design process.
By prioritising architectural strategies in the public space, educational infrastructure and cultural expression, this pre-thesis proposes a platform that promotes genuine interfaith dialogue while fostering cultural diversity in Malaysia. Ultimately, Johor Bahru's commitment to religious diversity and unity is reflected in the interreligious dialogue centre, a symbol of Malaysia's cultural diversity.
