Principal Investigator
Dr. Tanveer Hossain Bhuiyan is an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical, Aerospace, and Industrial Engineering Department at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Before joining UTSA, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Idaho National Laboratory. He received a Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and an M.S. in Operations Research with a minor in Statistics from Mississippi State University. Dr. Bhuiyan's research is focused on developing data-driven optimization algorithms and data analytics methods for solving decision-making problems under uncertainty in areas including electrified and sustainable transportation networks, security of cyber-physical systems, alloy design and discovery (particularly for nuclear applications), and power systems resiliency and operation integrating distributed energy resources. His research has been published in journals including the European Journal of Operational Research, Transportation Research Part B: Methodological, Transportation Research Part C: Emerging Technologies, Omega, Applied Energy, and Journal of Manufacturing Systems. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Energy, and the U.S. Navy. He is serving as a director in the Logistics and Supply Chain Division of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) and an Associate Editor for the Cyber-Physical Energy Systems journal. He is also a member of INFORMS and IISE.
Ph.D. Students
David Alexander
I have a bachelor's in mechanical engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru technological university-Anantapur, and a master's in industrial and systems engineering from Indian Insititute of technology -Kharagpur. During my master's i consulted for Ministry of heavy industries and Tata sons project titled 'Digital Manufacturing and Industrial Internet of Things for Enhanced Supply Chain Co-ordination, Quality and Maintenance' and my thesis was focused on Mathematical Models for Multi-Stage Hybrid Assembly Flow Shops with Preventive Maintenance and Transportation Delays. My interests lie in Mathematical decision modelling (Deterministic, Stochastic, Fuzzy) , optimization algorithms (Linear, mixed integer) for real world applications in routing, planning and scheduling. I'm interested in using Machine learning and deep learning techniques to accelerate these optimization algorithms to yield.
Sayed Hamid Hosseini Dolatabadi
Sayed Hamid Hosseini Dolatabadi was born in Isfahan, Iran in 1987. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering, power system from Isfahan University of Technology in 2009 and 2015, respectively. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at San Antonio. His research interests include power system operation and planning, operations research and optimization, local energy markets, machine learning, and renewable and flexible resources.
John Leija
John Leija is a graduate student at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. As an undergraduate, he worked on multidisciplinary projects with an emphasis on fluid and thermal simulations. Beginning in Fall 2025, he will pursue a Ph.D., focusing on the application of machine learning and Bayesian optimization to power generation systems.
Dai Nam Nguyen
Dai Nam Nguyen is originally from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the HCMC University of Technology. After working for a couple of years in an industrial environment, he continued his academic journey by joining the University of Texas at San Antonio as a master’s student in January 2024. During his master’s program, he focuses on creating data-driven mathematical models and algorithms aimed at solving decision-making problems, especially in contexts of uncertainty and game theory.
Kanran Li
Kanran Li is a Ph.D. student in Mechanical Engineering at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). She received her Bachelor’s degree in Statistics from Beijing University of Technology, China. Prior to joining UTSA, she worked as a Graduate Research Assistant in the Sociotechnical Systems Research Lab in the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. At UTSA, she works with Dr. Bhuiyan on the theory and applications of Bayesian Optimization and Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes, with a focus on developing methodologies for optimization and decision-making under uncertainty across diverse problem settings.
M.S. Students
My name is Kaleb Graham, and I am currently a Graduate Research Assistant at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), where I am pursuing a master's degree in mechanical engineering. Under the mentorship of Dr. Bhuiyan, my research focuses on machine learning, utilizing techniques such as Monte Carlo sampling and Bayesian statistics. I hold a bachelor's degree in physics with a minor in mathematics from East Central University, where I also contributed to research on Harold Grad's Nth moment equations and participated in collegiate football. Outside of my academic pursuits, I enjoy spending time with friends, working out, and engaging in video games. I am passionate about leveraging technology to advance society for future generations and hope I can continue to do so throughout my career.
Matthew Kuntscher
Matthew Kuntscher is a research assistant under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Tanveer Bhuiyan at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). He earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from UTSA in 2018 and began pursuing his Master of Science in Computer Engineering at UTSA in 2024. His research focuses on drone-based product delivery logistics in austere environments, exploring innovative solutions to optimize autonomous delivery systems in challenging and resource-limited conditions.

Indra N. Garcia-Morales
Indra Garcia-Morales is a 4th-year undergraduate student at The University of Texas at San Antonio. She is pursuing a double major in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering with a minor in Environmental Science. Her research interests include power system operation and planning, operations research and optimization, local energy markets, machine learning, and renewable and flexible resources.
Jose Luis Morales Jr.
Jose Luis Morales Jr. is a third-year undergraduate student at The University of Texas at San Antonio, pursuing a double major in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a concentration in Computer Engineering. He has conducted research as part of the National Science Foundation's Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at Texas State University, focusing on developing autonomous data collection methods for smart city firefighting applications. Jose also brings industry experience from his internship at Procter & Gamble’s Box Elder Manufacturing site, where he contributed to projects centered on Supply Network operations and optimizing material usage.
