About TANNORIA
About TANNORIA
At a time of profound transition in Europe, TANNORIA repositions historic leather tanning heritage not as a relic of the past, but as a dynamic, creative and ecologically conscious practice.
Our vision
TANNORIA brings together municipalities, museums, sector associations and creative communities from across Europe to rediscover the cultural depth of leather tanning — one of the continent's oldest crafts.
Through artistic residencies, co-creation laboratories, sustainable design experiments and the reactivation of historic sites, the project frames heritage as a generative resource for the next generation of European makers.
Our work is rooted in three convictions: that culture and ecology must advance together; that craft is contemporary; and that heritage thrives when communities shape it.
Main Objectives
Document and archive traditional tanning techniques, tools and spaces — building a transnational living memory.
Promote artistic creation and circulation across Europe through residencies, exhibitions and collaborative programmes.
Foster sustainable tanning practices and circular design principles informed by both tradition and innovation.
Engage youth, artisans and elders in co-creation labs that transmit knowledge across generations.
Reactivate historic tannery sites as community and creative spaces of cultural and economic value.
Why now
Europe's tanneries hold centuries of refined material knowledge — much of it already aligned with the principles of circularity, low waste and long product lifespans. TANNORIA reads this heritage through a contemporary lens to inspire the materials, designers and policies of the coming decade.
