Sundarbans Feature Documentary
My first feature documentary film focuses on the Sundarbans and the societal, economical, and environmental challenges the local inhabitants there face. The film centers around the work of the Joygopalpur Gram Vikash Kendra, an NBO, that works in multiple dimensions; helping create jobs, promote sustainable farming, create flood resistant infrastructure, and fostering climate change adaptability.
This was a bare-bones project with no funding. We were greatly assisted by JGVK on-site, one of the islands in the Sundarbans, Basanti, where we could only stay for one week right before the onset of the monsoon season. In that one week, we covered some of the local farmers, the cyclone and flooding resistant infrastructure, the aquaculture and animal husbandry farmers, some small-sized entrepreneurs and home industry workers, and attended the village committee meeting.
I share the cinematography and editing credit with my friend and director, Aaryan Das. I also assembled the script. The film is currently doing rounds in the film festival circuit and is due to premiere soon at the 8th SASFF organized by the Eastern Region of the Film Federation of India.
