Biography

Tanmay Basu is currently the Head of the Department of Data Science and Engineering at IISER Bhopal in India.  He has interests in developing methods and tools using novel computational natural language processing and machine learning techniques for potential knowledge discovery in electronic health records, social media, scientific literature, and other types of unstructured data. He has been overseeing multiple projects in applications of AI in sleep disorder and radiation oncology at AIIMS Bhopal and Jawaharlal Nehru Cancer Hospital in Bhopal in India. He is the supervisor of the Biomedical Data Science Lab at IISER Bhopal and has been mentoring the thesis of the masters and doctoral students in various topics of biomedical Knowledge discovery. 

A computer scientist by training, he has developed knowledge and skills within natural language processing and machine learning techniques since his graduate programs. He obtained bachelors, masters and PhD degrees in Computer Science respectively from University of Calcutta, Jadavpur University and Indian Statistical Institute, all in Kolkata. Prior to joining IISER Bhopal, he was working as a research fellow in the Health Data Research UK fellowship at NHS Birmingham in UK and Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences in University of Birmingham, UK. Before that, he worked as an assistant professor of computer science at Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University, Belur Math in West Bengal, India. He did his postdoctoral training respectively at the Department of Learning Health Sciences in University of Michigan Ann Arbor, USA and Division of Biomedical Informatics of Northwestern University in Chicago, USA. He delivered invited talks on different research topics of health and biomedical data science at Rice University, Duke University, University of Cincinnati in USA, LIMSI NLP Group in France, IIT Kharagpur and ISI Kolkata in India.
