Basketball Updates
Our 4th–6th grade travel basketball team had a great season, wrapping things up with the Carroll County Tournament held at the Conway Recreation Department. The team showed tremendous growth, teamwork, and effort throughout the season—well done to all involved.
We are also currently in the middle of our Tiger Cubs basketball season, where our youngest players are enjoying learning the game in a fun and supportive environment.
Adult & Community Programming
Pickleball continues to go strong for adults. We encourage anyone interested to join our beginner session from 12:00–2:00 in the KA Brett Gym—no equipment needed, we’ve got everything you need to get started.
Our Winter Survival Series was a big hit. Participants built quinzhees (snow huts) and learned how to safely build fires with our 2nd–3rd graders. Don’t worry—we all survived!
We also partnered with TCNA to offer Belly Dancing, which has seen great turnout and has been a lot of fun for participants.
In collaboration with WODC, we hosted a tracking program in Wonalancet where kids explored the outdoors, discovered tracks from moose and snowshoe hare, and even practiced moving like animals.
Outdoor Highlights
Our Full Moon Snowshoe event was extremely well attended and took place on a beautiful evening—thank you to everyone who joined us.
We also offered cross-country skiing at the Rec Field, with about a mile of groomed, flat trails. With melting conditions, we wouldn’t recommend heading out now, but it’s definitely something to look forward to next winter.
What’s Coming Up
Spring is right around the corner, and signups are open for spring sports. Additional programs will be released as field conditions improve.
The Egg Hunt is coming up on April 4th, and we look forward to another fun community event.
We Can Be Heroes - Sign up now for our Roll Playing Game for 4-6th graders
Summer planning is well underway:
Summer Camp Weeks: June 22–26 and August 17–21
Friday Trips: July 10, 17, 24, 31 and August 7 & 14
Swim Program: Information coming soon
All summer program registrations will open in early April, so keep an eye out.
Community Calendar
The Tamworth Community Calendar is now up and running! We encourage everyone to check it out to stay informed about local events. If your organization is interested in contributing, please reach out—we’re happy to help you get set up to add your own programs.

Recreation Department Report
This fall has been full of activity and community engagement across multiple programs and age groups. Our soccer season was a highlight, with players growing in skills, confidence, and teamwork at every level.
K–1st graders focused on skills and drills, building strong fundamentals in ball control, teamwork, and understanding the game. The 2nd–3rd graders continued working on those skills and also participated in some intramural play, giving them a chance to apply what they’ve learned in live game situations.
Our 4th–6th grade soccer team had a terrific season, finishing 5–1 in the regular schedule and performing well in the county rec department tournament. They fell only to the eventual champions and demonstrated tremendous growth throughout the season. More importantly, this group shared the ball unselfishly, communicated, worked together, and played with heart. Their development was clear from start to finish. Parents did pretty well from the sideline too! :)
Pickleball has now transitioned from outdoor to indoor play as the weather shifts, ensuring continued play for the growing number of community members who participate.
Walks with Rec continued this fall, though slightly slowed by my hamstring strain. Sorry!
A highlight of the season was when some KA Brett students and I joined Tin Mountain for the Salamander Search, a recurring population study of red-backed salamanders in the Earl Remick Natural Area—a great hands-on learning experience.
Halloween was a success once again—well done to the Tamworth Outing Club for another fun and memorable event for the community! Happy to have mildly contributed to this!
We had an amazing Owl Prowl. Partnering with the Chocorua Library, we had a Squam Lakes Natural Science come and talk about adaptations and I used my former skills as a naturalist to then lead the group up to the local cemetery and called for saw when owls and barred owls. It was a very fun experience.
THERE IS A NEW TRAIL at the Rec Field on Durrell Road. Its an easy 1/2 mile loop around the upper part of the property. More signage will be added in the future but its a great place to do a couple laps and know how far you have gone. Good for bikes or walkers. Thanks to TOC and Wyatt Berrier and to Jon Prior for your help!
Currently, kids in K–1 and 2nd–3rd grades are enjoying flexible after-school recreation at the Rec Field, where they can play any sport or game of their choice. This open format has allowed for fun, creativity, and lots of smiles.
REC NOW TRANSITIONING
Recreation has now transitioned to basketball season, and winter afterschool programming is on the way as well. Winter at the Rec Field will look noticeably different from past years, so keep an eye out for new opportunities, activities, and ways for residents of all ages to be active and engaged.
SIDE NOTE – RAIL TRAIL
On a related note, Karl Berh and I are serving as the two representatives on the Conway Branch Rail Trail Committee, covering the 21-mile corridor from Madison to Ossipee. At our most recent meeting, the committee selected a consulting group to work with, and in January we expect our next update as the project begins moving forward.
Thank you all!

Tamworth Recreation Report – Spring/Summer 2025
From the Desk of the Rec Director
This report steps back a bit to catch up on everything we’ve been up to—and it’s been a busy and exciting few months for Tamworth Rec!
🐣 We will start things off talking about this spring with a very successful Egg Hunt, all of the eggs were found in under eight minutes! A huge thank-you to everyone who helped make that event such a fun and festive tradition.
🎾 This spring, we also partnered with Advantage Kids Tennis to bring tennis programming to Tamworth, and it was a great to have them back this year.
⚽ Spring Soccer served over 35 kids across multiple age groups, giving young athletes the chance to grow their skills and play with friends. Meanwhile,
Pickleball continues to be a favorite, with outdoor play happening regularly on the tennis courts.
👟 Our Track & Field program had a strong season, participating in three meets—including the state meet! We saw several of our athletes place very high at the state level, and we’re proud of all the hard work and great sportsmanship displayed by the whole team.
⚾ T-Ball wrapped up with two fun and successful games against Madison—always a highlight for our youngest players.
🏕️ Our first week of Tamworth Summer Enrichment Program (TSEP) was packed with activity, learning, and exploration. We partnered with amazing local organizations and spent time all over town discovering what makes Tamworth so special.
🏊 Swim lessons are currently underway at both Bearcamp Pond and White Lake, with lots of progress and confidence-building already in session.
🎆 And of course, our 4th of July celebrations were a true highlight of the summer so far. Beautiful weather, big crowds, and a joyful parade made for a day to remember. Thank you to everyone who helped make it all happen!
Friday Trips are off and running as well with a full load of trip ahead of us for the summer.
A couple adult programs are upocoming as well!
☀️ As summer programs continue in full swing, I’m already beginning to plan for fall sports. Thank you, as always, for your support, your energy, and your participation. Tamworth Rec thrives because of the great community behind it.
See you around!
Best,
Jeremy Phillips
Tamworth Recreation Director
This past week, we kicked off our very first Open Gym sessions, and they were a hit! Our participants, ages 4-8, had a blast running, playing, and enjoying some free time to move. Adult basketball players hit the court for some friendly competition and a great workout. If you missed out, don’t worry—we’re doing it again this Saturday from 10:00-11:45 AM. Whether you're looking for a place for your kids to burn off some energy or you want to join a game of hoops, we’d love to see you there!
Right after Open Gym, we shift gears to pickleball! From 12:00-2:00 PM, beginners can come learn the game in a welcoming and supportive environment. If you’re already an experienced player, our Intermediate-Advanced Pickleball sessions are still happening at their regular times. Pickleball is a fantastic way to stay active, meet new people, and have fun—so grab a paddle and join us!
Looking ahead, we’re thrilled to start the LEGO Legends afterschool program for K-8th grade students at Cook Memorial Library next week. This exciting program will feature weekly LEGO challenges, creative free building, and plenty of fun!
Stay tuned for more updates on all things recreation in Tamworth, and we hope to see you at the gym or on the court this weekend!
This past week, we wrapped up a fantastic cross-country ski program at the Rec Field. Thanks to great participation and plenty of snow, skiers of all ages had the chance to develop their skills and enjoy the outdoors. Unfortunately, the cold winds forced us to cancel the quinzhee hut program, but we’ll look forward to bringing it back in the future when conditions cooperate.
Our youth basketball season is coming to a close. Players showed incredible growth, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout. We’ll be celebrating their hard work and dedication soon—great job to all our athletes and coaches!
Meanwhile, pickleball continues to thrive, with strong turnout and a new schedule starting next week—be sure to check the Rec calendar for details. Also, mark your calendars for March 8, when Open Gym begins for both kids and adult basketball.
Looking ahead, we’ll be announcing spring sports sign-ups next week along with a couple of new adult programs, so stay tuned! Behind the scenes, we’re already working on an exciting summer schedule, and we can’t wait to share more in the coming months.
