Safiya Martinez is a Junior at Scripps College studying environmental science. Her main interests lie within agriculture and agronomy, however she participates in amphibian research on her home campus, and is pursuing a minor in the fine arts. From Chicago, IL, Safiya hopes to research potential agricultural advancements and how those might change from the Midwest to the Southwest. Safiya is a team leader for one of the two research groups in the REEU program and has helped lead a team of students in carrying out research, submitting to a conference, and writing a paper to be published. Coming from an environmental background and knowing almost nothing about coding, through this internship, Safiya sought a deeper understanding of agricultural technology, the basics of coding, and the different skills required for agtech research. She hopes to pursue a career in agronomy, working as a vineyard soil consultant within the U.S. and abroad.
