After almost 3 weeks of training, the 2025 cohort was split into two teams based on academic background and began working on their research projects.
Team 1 consists of Jacob Poland, Sergio Romero, Stephen Kim, Raul Castillo, and Rynn Wallace.
Team 1 focused on developing a cost-efficient crop monitoring system using an EnviroPro soil probe, an infrared temperature sensor, and Arduinos with LTE and LoRa capabilities. This week, they clarified their project goal, gathered materials from mentors, and ordered additional components. They began reviewing literature relevant to soil monitoring and agricultural data integration. Progress included successful data collection from the EnviroPro probe using an Arduino and voltage booster, initial integration work on the Maduino board, and design work on sensor housing and infrared sensor attachments. They also improved their data dashboard and established a GitHub repository for collaboration.
Team 2, consisting of Jenna Moyers, Julian Carmona, Mohriz Murad, Safiya Martinez, and Sergio Velasquez, focused on finalizing their research question, finishing background research and lit reviews, and readying themselves and the model for data collections. They worked on developing the ML model, placing sensors, and obtaining soil sensor data. They also began working on the dashboard by processing UAV data images into orthomosaics through Metashape.
