What is the Tampere Critical Academy?
The Critical Academy is a private, independent cultural and educational center and think tank founded in 1968. It is a nonprofit organization. The Tampere Critical Academy was founded in 1968 on the initiative of philosopher and professor Reijo Wilenius to diversify the climate of public discourse. Its main office is in Helsinki, with branch offices in Jyväskylä and, since 2018, once again in Tampere. In 2019, its activities expanded to Pori in the Satakunta region. There was a long hiatus in operations during the COVID-19 pandemic and afterward, but now we are resuming our activities in Tampere!
Critical Academy’s core values include a deliberate non-alignment with any particular worldview or political stance. Our activities are guided by enlightenment, openness and freedom in education, human growth, the exploration of the new and respect for the old, dialogue, equality, justice, and respect for the individual as a human being.
In Tampere, our mission is to create a new forum for discussion where the academic world and broader societal interests meet in a spirit of dialogue. Our work is grounded in a broadly understood academic and scientific tradition. Our goal is to bring people together to discuss the meaning and diversity of being human. Philosophy, humanism, and art can provide tools for being human and living a good life—whether as an active participant, a member of a community, or as someone who expresses and develops their own identity.
In addition to lectures and other events aimed at the general public, we also organize a variety of more intensive courses, training sessions, and discussion events.
