Online Mindfulness Classes as a Remedy for Pandemic-related Isolation
Dr. Ellie Babaie, a UCSF postdoctoral scholar, moved to the US from Teheran, Iran, to pursue her education. As the pandemic took hold in early 2020, she found herself far from family and suddenly isolated from her local community. Dr. Babaie shares that, “COVID added to my stress and made it worse because I was totally isolated from other people. I started having panic attacks and waking up in the middle of the night. I started feeling depressed. I got to the point where I needed external resources and help.” She tried meditation apps, but they weren’t enough.
Massage Therapy Training for Community Practitioners to Work in Acute Settings
Hospitals are in need of more massage therapists trained to work with medically diverse patients. The Osher Center is filling this need by launching a series of specialized advanced trainings for professional massage therapists.
Announcing the Launch of the Integrative Health Equity and Applied Research (IHEAR) Summer Training Program
The Osher Center announces the launch of a new NIH-funded program for predoctoral students, the Integrative Health Equity and Applied Research (IHEAR) Summer Training Program. This program creates an accessible, early career pathway for developing researchers to learn about integrative health equity, an emerging field focused on applying integrative approaches to improving health among underserved and vulnerable populations.
Announcing the Endowment of the UCSF Osher Mini Medical School for the Public
The UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Medicine and the Osher Mini Medical School for the Public are pleased to announce that The Bernard Osher Foundation has gifted an endowment for the Osher Mini Med School within the Osher Center. Since 2007, annual funding from The Bernard Osher Foundation has enabled the Osher Mini Med School to be the premier source for health education in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.
Tracing the Evolution of Integrative Medicine One Chapter at a Time
The inclusion of a chapter on integrative medicine in a prominent textbook for primary care practitioners on behavioral medicine marked a significant milestone. UCSF Osher Center members have written the first and each subsequent version of the chapter, reflecting the center’s critical role as an amplifier of culture change.
