The Clever Tenali Raman and the Thieves / தெனாலிராமனும் திருடர்களும் 

English: Once, the king's city was troubled by a sly group of thieves. One night, two of these thieves entered Tenali Raman's backyard garden to rob his house. Tenali Raman was walking in the garden and noticed them hiding behind the bushes. He decided to teach them a lesson.

Tamil: ஒரு காலத்தில், மன்னரின் நகரம் ஒரு தந்திரமான திருடர்கள் கூட்டத்தால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டது. ஒரு இரவு, அந்தத் திருடர்களில் இருவர் தெனாலிராமனின் வீட்டைத் திருடுவதற்காக அவனது வீட்டுப் பின்முற்றத் தோட்டத்திற்குள் நுழைந்தனர். தோட்டத்தில் நடந்து கொண்டிருந்த தெனாலிராமன், அவர்கள் புதர்களுக்குப் பின்னால் ஒளிந்திருப்பதை கவனித்தான். அவர்களுக்கு ஒரு பாடம் கற்பிக்க அவன் முடிவு செய்தான்

English: Raman went inside his house and spoke loudly to his wife so the thieves could hear him outside. He said, "My dear, the city is unsafe due to thieves. Let us pack all our gold and jewels into our large iron box and drop it into our deep well to keep it safe." The thieves heard this and were very happy.

Tamil: இராமன் தன் வீட்டுக்குள் சென்று, வெளியே இருக்கும் திருடர்களுக்குக் கேட்கும் வகையில் தன் மனைவியிடம் சத்தமாகப் பேசினான். அவன், "அன்பே, திருடர்களால் நகரம் பாதுகாப்பற்றதாக உள்ளது. நமது தங்கம் மற்றும் நகைகள் அனைத்தையும் நமது பெரிய இரும்புப் பெட்டியில் அடைத்து, அதைப் பாதுகாப்பாக வைத்திருக்க நமது ஆழமான கிணற்றுக்குள் போடுவோம்" என்றான். இதைக் கேட்ட திருடர்கள் மிகவும் மகிழ்ச்சியடைந்தனர்.

English: Raman and his wife carried a heavy iron box outside and dropped it into the well with a loud splash. In reality, Raman had filled the box completely with heavy stones and rocks. After dropping the box, Raman went inside his house to sleep, laughing quietly.

Tamil: இராமனும் அவனது மனைவியும் ஒரு கனமான இரும்புப் பெட்டியை வெளியே தூக்கி வந்து, பலத்த சத்தத்துடன் கிணற்றுக்குள் போட்டனர். உண்மையில், இராமன் அந்தப் பெட்டி முழுவதும் கனமான கற்களையும் பாறைகளையும் நிரப்பியிருந்தான். பெட்டியைப் போட்ட பிறகு, இராமன் தன் வீட்டுக்குள் சென்று நிம்மதியாகத் தூங்கினான்.

English: The thieves rushed to the well and began drawing out the water using a bucket to reach the treasure box at the bottom. They pulled out water all night long. The water flowed out of the well and filled Raman's entire garden, beautifully watering all of his trees and plants.

Tamil: திருடர்கள் கிணற்றடிக்கு விரைந்து வந்து, அடியில் இருக்கும் புதையல் பெட்டியை அடைவதற்காக ஒரு வாளியைப் பயன்படுத்தித் தண்ணீரை இறைக்கத் தொடங்கினர். அவர்கள் இரவு முழுவதும் தண்ணீரை வெளியே இறைத்தனர். கிணற்றிலிருந்து வெளியேறிய தண்ணீர் இராமனின் தோட்டம் முழுவதும் பாய்ந்து, அவனது மரங்கள் மற்றும் செடிகள் அனைத்திற்கும் அழகாக நீர் பாய்ச்சியது.

English: Just before dawn, the thieves finally emptied the well and pulled up the box. When they opened it, they were shocked to find only common stones inside! Tenali Raman walked out of his house, smiled, and said, "Thank you, my friends, for watering my entire garden for free tonight!" The thieves felt ashamed and quickly ran away.

Tamil: விடியற்காலைக்கு சற்று முன்பு, திருடர்கள் ஒருவழியாக கிணற்றை காலி செய்து பெட்டியை மேலே இழுத்தனர். அதைத் திறந்து பார்த்தபோது, அதற்குள் வெறும் சாதாரணக் கற்கள் மட்டுமே இருப்பதைக் கண்டு அதிர்ச்சியடைந்தனர்! தெனாலிராமன் தன் வீட்டிலிருந்து வெளியே வந்து சிரித்துக்கொண்டே, "நண்பர்களே, இன்று இரவு என் தோட்டம் முழுவதற்கும் இலவசமாக நீர் பாய்ச்சியதற்கு மிக்க நன்றி!" என்றான். திருடர்கள் வெட்கப்பட்டு அங்கிருந்து வேகமாக ஓடிவிட்டனர்.
