Throughout the Game Studies module, I had the invaluable opportunity to lead my team in designing ShiokNiah, a modern reimagining of the traditional Cherki game. As the team leader, I carried significant responsibilities, including coordinating tasks, making key design decisions, and ensuring that our project remained aligned with the objectives and timeline. While the role was undoubtedly challenging and required effective time management and communication, I am deeply grateful for the support and cooperation of my teammates, whose enthusiasm and dedication made the journey an enjoyable and enriching experience.
One of the highlights of the project was our field research trip to Malacca, where we delved into the rich cultural heritage of Cherki. This hands-on experience provided a deeper understanding of the game’s historical and cultural significance, which informed and inspired our redesign process. Conducting research as a team not only strengthened our bond but also enhanced the authenticity and cultural relevance of our project.
Ultimately, this experience allowed me to grow as a leader by improving my ability to delegate, collaborate, and adapt to challenges. It also reinforced my appreciation for the value of teamwork, research, and creativity in game design. I am proud of what we accomplished together and look forward to applying these lessons to future projects.
As one of the modules I’m excited to study, this journey has been more fun than I expected. Starting from zero to where I am now, I’ve learned a lot about what a game is, game mechanics and structures, gameplay patterns, how we design a game, and more soft skills as well. Communication, teamwork, and adaptability are important while working in a team. I got to apply the skills we’ve learned before to this module while also noticing areas where I should improve further. This experience has been truly valuable and has provided me with a solid foundation in game studies.
Moreover, I deeply appreciate the hard work put in by our group leader, Winnie, and the cooperation of our teammates. Each of us took on different roles and worked together to develop the game, conducting playtests to refine the mechanics and ensure the playability of our card game. I also enjoyed visiting Melaka with them to conduct interviews about Cherki cards. It was a great opportunity to try and explore new things together.
From the game proposal to the final design of the actual cards, I’m quite satisfied with what we’ve achieved throughout the process. I look forward to seeing this game played by more and more people!
This module provided me with valuable insights into the systematic process of creating a game. Despite the normal lecture-based class, this module emphasised learning via play, engaging discussions, and hands-on experiences. The task of creating a new game inspired by a forgotten traditional game was especially meaningful. The journey began with ideation, followed by drafting, prototyping, and finally execution. Throughout the process, we engaged in multiple discussions and reached agreements, with each team member's opinions and suggestions playing a crucial role.
As a cultural enthusiast, I appreciated the opportunity to learn about Peranakan culture through field research—one of my favorite parts of the process. It was an amazing experience to gain insights directly from the expert. Another important lessons I learned was understanding the value of playtesting. Developing a good game structure and set of rules requires multiple iterations, adjustments, and thorough testing to achieve a polished final product. It was also satisfied to see the final printing product with the logo design I made.
I am deeply grateful to my teammates for making this journey productive and enjoyable, especially our capable group leader, who put in great effort and ensured that everything ran smoothly. In short, this module provided me with a rewarding and enjoyable learning experience.
I am very happy to share my thoughts on this game design module. It has been an amazing experience working under the guidance of our attentive and kind lecturer, Dr. Charles. In this teamwork-based module, my teammates and I had great collaboration and memorable experiences, accomplishing many tasks together. As part of our project, we even arranged a field trip to Melaka to learn about the Nyonya culture while working hard on our assignment.
I am truly grateful to have had such a wonderful team. We communicated and cooperated well with one another. Among all the teammates, I am especially thankful for our team leader, Winnie. She did an excellent and fair job in distributing tasks and took on a lot of responsibilities herself. The success and achievements of our team belong to everyone, but the leader played a crucial role. Without her leadership, we would not have achieved such great results. Beyond her responsibilities, she was always willing to help and care for us.
Lastly, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Dr. Charles for his feedback and guidance throughout the module. Thanks to the hard work of all the team members, our card game design and related tasks turned out to be beautiful and well-crafted. The game itself is also very fun to play, and I hope it can be enjoyed by more people as a great way to spend time with a fun card game experience.
At the start of the semester, this seemed like a fun module, and I’m glad to say that in the end, it is still fun! Working on this group assignment, where we created an entirely new card game from scratch to the final product, has been a challenging yet rewarding experience. I’m fortunate to have groupmates with incredible dedication and a group leader who guided us systematically, ensuring a complete and polished outcome. The results truly amazed me, and I’m proud of what we accomplished together.
My role focused on designing and contributing to photo documentation, which helped keep the work organized and progressing smoothly. Though I was sometimes encumbered with other assignments—just like everyone else in the group—I appreciated the collaborative effort that allowed us to navigate these challenges and pull off a fascinating final product.
This project not only tested our creativity and teamwork but also strengthened my appreciation for group dynamics. Seeing our ideas transform into a tangible, playable card game has been deeply satisfying. I’m grateful for this experience and for having such supportive teammates to share it with. This journey has reaffirmed how enjoyable and impactful working together can be.
