Frequently Asked Questions

What is Shorin Ryu Karate?

Shorin Ryu Karate is martial art that was developed on the Island of Okinawa from native martial arts infused with other martial arts from China, Japan and other sources. It combines the practice of basic techniques (kihon), forms (kata) and self defense applications (kumite) to create a practical martial art.

What Benefits Can I Get From Practicing Karate?

There are many benefits to practicing karate on a regular basis. Besides the obvious benefit of self-defense, Karate can improve physical fitness, help with weight loss, improve flexibility and balance. It can help to instill self-confidence, improve concentration, reduce stress, and provide a means to express oneself artistically.

How Long Does it Take to Get a Black Belt?

This is a very common question and one that most beginning students of martial arts are keenly interested in. Unfortunately, there is no easy answer for this question. It really depends upon the individual. Achieving a black belt requires more than technical expertise, it is also about the character of the individual. Rank progressions and "belts" are awarded as the student gains skill and develop their character. They are not considered "tests" to be achieved. It is the journey that is important not the destination.

What is a typical class like?

A typical karate class at Tallahassee Karate Club includes practice in Basics (Kihon), Forms (Kata) and Application (Kumite) with an underlying focus on the body dynamics (Koshi) applied. Students and Instructor begin the class in a circle and do slow warm-up exercises and stretches together followed by punching and kicking techniques. Practicing in a circle allows everyone to learn from and help motivate each other. There is no focus on particular rank when lining up or standing in a circle as everyone has something to learn from someone else. After the circle practice, stances, blocks, striking and kicking techniques are practiced while moving across the floor together. Kata practice is next and usually takes up the majority of the practice time for a class. Generally, the whole class will practice certain kata together and then small groups or individuals will break off and work on specific kata together or individually based on their experience level or kata they are currently working on. Finally, during the remainder of the class, students will practice some form of Kumite or application of technique. Throughout the class, the Instructor observes, demonstrates and lectures on specific items of interest relevant to the training.

Do I Need to Wear a Uniform and Where Can I Get One?

Students are required to purchase a white karate Gi (uniform) and Belt. Gi may be purchased online at one of many retailers. Sizing charts are generally available at most online merchant websites. For most normal classes, students are to wear Gi pants and a T-shirt. Club T-shirts are available at http://www.cafepress.com/kishaba_fl in Men's and Women's styles. Full uniforms (Top, Bottom + Belt) are only required for promotions and special training events. Black or other color uniforms are not permitted. Gi's should never be worn outside of the Dojo instead of street clothes.

How many "Tests" are there, how often are they, and how much does a test cost?

Promotion demonstrations are held when a student is ready and the instructor feels it is time for the student to demonstrate. There is no set schedule and no fee associated with promotions. The only cost that will be incurred is the cost of a new belt which the student may purchase from any online merchant.
