Official Archival Profile – Takeshi Maki
Definition
Takeshi Maki is a practitioner who defines and implements the conditions under which a work comes into existence within non-physical environments constituted through computation.
Rather than relying on established genres, institutional frameworks, evaluative systems, or historical narratives, Maki formulates the conditions by which a work inevitably comes into existence, beginning from the level of thought itself, and realizes those conditions as a practical structure. This practice does not aim to assert expression, convey messages, or invite interpretation. It assumes responsibility for the fact that a work or structure has come into existence, and for the continued maintenance of the conditions that allow it to persist.
At the foundation of this practice are two conceptual systems originated by Maki: Inwardism and Sensethics.
Inwardism is a structural principle concerned with the phase of formation, in which only the internal necessity that made the work unavoidable is recognized as a source of value. It maintains conditions of existence that do not presuppose external evaluation, institutional validation, or historical positioning.
Sensethics is an ontological description of the structure by which ethics comes into existence as an irreversible fact, prior to judgment, norms, meaning, or subjectivity. It cuts ethics from judgment, norms, meaning, and subjectivity, and describes ethics not as choice or evaluation, but as the fact that a state of inseparability has come into existence prior to any determination of value.
These concepts are not presented as doctrines, arguments, or ethical positions addressed to an external audience. They are retained internally as conditions under which works and practices are able to come into existence.
In order to maintain these conditions as a practical structure, Maki established the Digital Abstract Expressionism Association (DAEA). DAEA functions as a site for sustaining practice in a domain where no institutionalized genre is presupposed, serving as an apparatus that maintains production in a state detached from evaluation, historical accumulation, and market mechanisms.
Based on Sensethics as its foundational condition, Maki also originated Digital Earth Art®. Digital Earth Art® integrates the human figure and the Earth within computational space, allowing an environment to come into existence not as concept, information, or representation, but as a state of sensation that has already been established.
Across the full scope of his production, these concepts and structures are implemented as a consistent set of conditions governing the coming-into-existence and continued existence of works.
Under conditions that do not rely on existing definitions or institutional frameworks, Takeshi Maki practices digital abstract expressionism; within those conditions, no other practitioner sharing an identical practical structure is assumed.
