From Court to Cross
March 31, 2026
We believe the Gospel is not confined to a pulpit on Sundays, it's found all over the world and even on the basketball court. Taiwan may look familiar on the outside: modern cities, thriving markets, open democracy, and freedom for churches. Yet spiritually, the landscape is very different. Less than 5% of the population identifies as Christian, far lower than similar East Asian countries like Singapore or South Korea, where 20–30% follow Jesus.
The challenge is both cultural and relational. Deep ties to ancestral worship and traditional religions shape family and community identity. Following Christ can feel like stepping away from heritage or even dishonoring family. Prosperity and stability mask other pressures: wealth is unevenly distributed, and children face intense expectations to succeed academically and socially. Spiritual hunger is often hidden behind outward success. Taiwan’s complex relationship with China adds urgency, making the island a unique opportunity for Gospel witness in the Chinese-speaking world.
Basketball creates a natural bridge into this context. On the court, young and old, rich and poor, local and foreign come together, barriers fall, and real community is formed. Friendships flourish, trust grows, and hearts become open to the Gospel. The game itself forms character: it teaches humility, sacrifice, perseverance, and unity—virtues at the heart of the Christian life. Because hidden in the seams of every basketball is the shape of a cross.
It is fitting that basketball was created by both physical education instructor and chaplain Dr. James Naismith, who saw sports as a way to share the gospel and grow as Christians. Today, we carry that same vision forward using basketball not just to play, but to build character, share in community and to proclaim Christ.
Basketball is just a game, but in God’s hands it becomes a bridge: between people, cultures, and ultimately, between hearts and Jesus.
