Gospa Nola: A Literary Masterpiece by Isidora Sekulic

Gospa Nola is a short story from the collection "Chronicle of a Small Town Cemetery" by Isidora Sekulic, one of the most prominent Serbian writers of the 20th century. The main motif of this story is the cemetery, and the story begins with a description of the small town cemetery and the personalities who belong to those graves. The main voice in the story belongs to a strong personality, Stanojla Perinova, who does not shy away from struggle and whose whole life is struggle, effort, hardship and self-sacrifice. Historical events are chronologically recorded, the author of the work deals with the destinies of families and individuals and speaks about transience and death. Gospa Nola is a story about transience and futility, and the very thought of transience enriches all events and all described lives.

Gospa Nola was a robust woman, originally from Herzegovina. From an early age, Gospa Nola stood out from other girls by her physical appearance. As a child, Nola lived on the border between Serbia and Bosnia together with her father and mother. However, her mother became ill and died. Nola was a formed personality as a girl in her homeland: "Nola was a rare person, with prominent character traits: truthfulness, righteousness, seriousness, humaneness". These are the main features of her character, which will develop even more in the new environment and new circumstances. Her psychological and moral character appears massive and sturdy, exceptional and fascinating. Gospa Nola was a concept on the farm and in the small town. When you say Gospa Nola, you only think of good, exemplary, exceptional. The small town, which produced and spread stories, built portraits and recorded scandals, could not use Gospa Nola's name with a negative sign because only epithets went with that name: simple, persistent, noble, modest, proud, humane, honest, firm, generous , brave , fair , diligent , serious . All these qualities are in strong contrast to the portrait. Her appearance seems discordant and clumsy , "rough and unpolished"; dressing too simple and inappropriate for her financial situation. Strictness , seriousness , sharp and often slightly ironic language , reveal a hard person and a hard heart . But behind that mask lies nobility , understanding , warmth , humanity and mercy "widely spread by Gospa Nola". Nola is a mountainous nature by birth , by constitution , nature and diligence . She is aware that she is tall and strong like her father , but by other qualities she does not resemble either

Isidora Sekulic was born in 1877 in Mosorin, a village in present-day Serbia. She was a brilliant student who graduated from the pedagogical school in Budapest in 1892 and obtained her doctorate in Germany in 1922. She was fluent in several classical and modern languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Norwegian and Russian. She was also interested in natural sciences and philosophy, and wrote essays on various topics such as music, theater, art, architecture and literature. She was the first woman to become a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1939.

Isidora Sekulic is best known for her novels and short stories that explore the human condition in the modern world. She was influenced by European realism, impressionism and symbolism, but also developed her own original style that combines lyrical, meditative, introspective and analytical elements. Her characters are often complex and contradictory, reflecting the diversity and richness of human nature. She also pays attention to the historical and social context of her stories, depicting the changes and challenges that Serbia faced during the 19th and 20th centuries.

One of her most famous works is The Chronicle of a Small Town Cemetery (Kronika palanackog groblja), published in 1940. It is a collection of interconnected stories that revolve around a cemetery in a small town. Each story begins with a description of a grave and then goes back to the life of the person buried there. The stories span several generations and cover various aspects of life such as love, family, friendship, war, politics, religion, culture and death. The stories are not arranged chronologically, but rather according to thematic and symbolic connections. The cemetery serves as a metaphor for the transience and futility of human existence, but also as a reminder of the value and beauty of life.

Isidora Sekulic died in 1958 in Belgrade at the age of 81. She left behind a rich and diverse literary legacy that has been recognized and appreciated by critics and readers alike. She is considered one of the most important Serbian writers of the 20th century and one of the pioneers of modern Serbian prose.
