“Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, as indeed you do.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:11
“Holy Spirit, please come and fill the hearts of Your faithful; kindle in them the fire of Your love.”
Pentecost Sunday
We celebrate the Holy Spirit coming upon the disciples in the form of tongues of fire, giving them the ability to speak in different languages, so that people from all nations could hear and understand the apostles proclaiming the marvelous works of God in their own familiar tongues.
This marvelous work is the mystery of the Cross of Christ.
When we read this passage from the Acts of the Apostles, we may ask ourselves: “What about us?” Most of us may not have the ability to speak foreign languages, nor are we engaged in missionary work abroad. But if we allow the Holy Spirit to encourage and guide us, the effect the Spirit brings within us will not be less than what was seen in the apostles. As Saint Paul says in Galatians, the fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Therefore, even today, the invisible Holy Spirit can still come upon Christians like “tongues of fire,” so that each Christian may use his or her life as a way of witnessing. A life filled with the Holy Spirit becomes a “language of love,” and those who encounter it can come to understand the Gospel of Christ without difficulty.
Today, the urgency of proclaiming the Gospel is no less than in the early Church.
Lord, sustain me with Your grace. Help me to trust in Your work within me, and guide my words and actions so they may reflect Your love. Keep my heart open to Your Spirit, and in Your time and Your way, may my life through word and deed gently help at least one person come closer to the Church community.
This May, let us honor Mary with devotion, recite the Rosary diligently, follow her gentle example, and pray for peace in the world and the conversion of all hearts, bringing God’s light to everyone.
This month, let us pray that everyone, from those who produce food to those who consume it, may be more mindful of how we use our resources and work together to avoid food waste. May we find ways to ensure that all people, here in Taiwan and beyond, have access to good, nourishing food. As we grow in compassion and generosity, let’s create a community where everyone can share in the gift of sustenance, and no one is left hungry.
