Race in Education Focused Resources

Texts

"This is an amazing resource for educators. (It is deliberately titled, so do not let your gender discourage you from reading it. It is titled this way because the majority of teachers in the US are white women, and the majority of the at-risk population are black boys. They intentionally use “boys” to reflect that we teach children.) The authors center this work around the impact of race on education and relationships between students, teachers, and parents. It is comprehensive. It is a book that includes 40+ short chapters/essays with reflection activities at the end of each chapter. It covers everything from white identity development and failure of education for BIPOC children, to systemic changes required in education, to talking to BIPOC parents about their kids. At times, I found myself writing “deaning!” or “I block!” or “AP Bio!” in the margins. It hit all of my needs. I know this book will become a reference for me in my teaching for years to come. I encourage and hope that all of us will read it!" - Amanda Benedict

"Grading for Equity advocates assessment techniques that are fairer to those from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. But it does more than that. The book lays out why, in the name of equitable grading for all students, schools and teachers should base achievement grades solely on summative assessments (not homework or formative learning exercises of any kind, not participation, not extra credit), why these assessments might assume different formats, why retakes should be not just encouraged but required - and other ideas he supports with compelling evidence and reasoning but that nonetheless challenge how many of us currently grade. Whether you’re a second-year or fortieth-year teacher, it’s an eye-opening and thought-provoking read - and one that could inform us taking hard steps toward greater grading equity, soon." - Jon Willson
