What is Tae Kwon Do ?
Tae Kwon Do is a Korean Martial art, the first traces of which go back 2400 years.
This martial art is based on striking and was created by and for warriors who were fighting foreign invasion. Despite the twists and turns of history, tae kwon do has survived till this day.
After the liberation and renaissance in 1945 in Korea, Taekwondo was taught chiefly to the secret service and to special forces before being democratised in the 60s/70s. It later became an olympic sport which removed its martial characteristics.
Traditional Taekwondo as taught by Master Lee Kwan Young (see internet) aims to preserve the original basics and orientations of the art.
The instructor:
I have been a practitioner of various martial arts for almost 40 years. It was a pleasure and an honour for me to have been Master Lee’s student in his dojang for 9 years and to have obtained my grades under his instruction before he sent me out to teach. I have now been a practitioner of traditional Taekwondo for 30 years and am still his disciple.
My background:
I did wrestling, freestyle wrestling (silver medal), close combat (airborne sergeant, Hoshin Moosool, Aikido (black belt) and Taekwondo (black belt).
Classes:
Classes focus on personal development and self defence, not competition.
After the obligatory warmup, we work on basic technique which allows the student to progress in the medium/long term as well ’tricks and tips’ including counter holds that can be immediately effective in certain circumstances. It is for this reason that classes are targeted at adults and teenagers as of the age of 13. It goes without saying that we do some stretching exercises at the end of each class.
We are very pleased at the high percentage of women students, they often make up more than half of the class.
Classes take place at the new dojo in front of the gendarmerie, on Wednesdays from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
