Battle of the Heavens

Battle of the Heavens

In the beginning of time, a big bang created a world split between heaven and hell. Each world was ruled by all-mighty entities: Aura, the goddess angel of heaven, and Amadan, the demon king of hell. For years, the two rulers waged war upon each other, creating chaos for centuries to come.

The two rulers also had children of their own. The lone son of Amadan was named Zaratras, who became the most notorious and feared soldier in the demon king’s army. The lone daughter of Aura was named Yama, who also became the strongest soldier in the army of heavens. Both fought countless days and nights for a war created by their parents. However, when they met on the battlefield, it was deemed too difficult for each other to defeat one another as their skills were too on par. Zaratras was curious of the one soldier that he was not able to defeat and became fascinated with Yama. As he was tired of fighting for a war that he did not want, Zaratras decided that he would try to talk to Yama to see if perhaps she felt the same way about the war as he did.

The next day, both Zaratras and Yama entered the battlefields just like any other day. But this time, Zaratras solely targeted on Yama to get her to focus her attention on him. After noticing this, Yama flew up to the sky where Zaratras was waiting.

“So, we finally me—” Zaratras started to talk, but an arrow shot straight to his face. After dodging the arrow, Zaratras drew his sword in frustration.

“No need to talk, demon. I will erase you and end this pointless war!” said Yama.

“Pointless… what do you mean by that?” asked Zaratras, surprised to hear the word.

“I take no part in what my mother decides. I simply eradicate all evil, and you, demon, are evil,” said Yama, drawing another arrow in her bow.

“That’s enough. Let’s stop this. You and I have no business of fighting each other any longer” said Zaratras, turning his back on Yama. To Zaratras' surprise, Yama did not attack him even after turning his back on this arch nemesis.

As the war continued, so did the communication between Zaratras and Yama. They started to pretend like they were fighting, just to fly into the sky or even a heavily wooded forest to talk about each other’s lives. The more they talked, the more they started to fall for each other. As powerful but lonely beings, Zaratras and Yama understood how each other felt better than anyone else. They fell in love, but knowing their parents were sworn-enemies, they had to keep their relationship a secret. Despite their careful efforts, Zaratras and Yama gave birth to a child and named him Amaterasu. However, the cries of the child upon birth reached the Heaven and Hell itself. Upon hearing the baby cry, Aura and Amadan were furious in their own respective dens and decided to put a dangerous spell on the baby. Upon birth, Amaterasu was set on fire and it quickly spread to Yama as she was holding the baby. This fire was full of black flames that did not seem to go out at all no matter what Zaratras tried to do. After suffering from the burns, Yama eventually died. Zaratras was not aware of the wrongdoings of the two gods as he cursed his own baby, Amaterasu, for the death of his lover. 'Revenge' was tasteless and wrong as Zaratras struck down the infant with his sword, slicing him into many pieces. It is said that many humans sprang up from each piece of Amaterasu, and the wrath of Zaratras is what keeps humans suffering in the mainland.

Author's note:

The story I am writing is similar to that of the story of Izanagi and Izanami but with a bit of a twist. Izanagi is the Japanese God of the Heavens, the highest being in the beginning of time. Izanami is the beautiful goddess of love who became the wife of Izanagi. Izanami ad Izanagi give birth to many children, including Kagutsuchi, the god of fire. The birth of Kagutsuchi sets Izanami on fire, eventually killing her from the injuries. Izanagi decides to take revenge on his own child for killing the love of his life, cutting the fire god into many pieces. It is said that many new gods sprang up from each piece of the fire god. Izanami and Izanagi were married as god and goddess, but the story I am writing features the son and daughter of two opposite worlds. Zaratras, the son of the demon king, decides that he will convince the daughter of the angel goddess, Yama, to end the war that he wants no part in.
