E-Waste: An Expanding Issue

According to a 2020 survey, the average American owns more than 10 electronic devices, and according to another report, the average U.S. household has about 25 connected devices – more than twice the average amount in 2019.

Between tablets, phones, and laptops, as well as televisions, microwaves, and other everyday electronic appliances, enormous amounts of electronic waste are being generated worldwide every day; E-waste is the world’s fastest-growing domestic waste stream. The United Nations’ Global E-waste Monitor report predicts we will reach 74 Metric Tonnes of E-waste by 2030, almost twice the amount it was sixteen years ago.

Most of the large amounts of electronic waste we produce isn't being recycled: in fact, only about 17.4 percent of it was recycled in 2019, likely even less today.

This causes a large drain of nonrenewable and valuable resources such as gold, silver, platinum, and copper, as well as major environmental, economic, and health problems all over the world.

About

Recycling E-Waste, one community at a time.

Fullerton, California (USA).

In fighting against E-Waste, the TAE Troy Branch was founded with a clear goal to raise awareness for responsible E-Waste management. We connect with local communities around Troy High School, hold battery collections and recycling drives for our 1 Million Battery Campaign, and raise E-Waste awareness on why E-Waste needs to be properly managed in ways that are safe for us as well as the environment.

We also recently started the PEARL Campaign, where we campaign and write letters to members of US Congress to advocate for more E-Waste reducing legislation. Check it out on the Ongoing Events page!
