The Close Combat Tactical Trainer (CCTT) integrates all facets of combat vehicle operations to immerse Warfighters in the scenarios they will face on the battlefield. Through the CCTT, units train and are validated in tactics, doctrine, weapons systems, mission planning and rehearsals.

The CCTT presents logistics, artillery, mortar and aviation units to a synthetic battlefield with realistic terrain. Soldiers move, shoot and communicate on this battlefield by operating combat vehicles and employing simulated weapon systems.

My army was spread out due to our forced march. We had to entice Takeda's army to break rank if we were to destroy them in time. Thus, I had my left wing over-reach, moving a little too far from the rest of the army. The bait was too delicious for Takeda's famed cavalry, and they charged us. One by one, my units caught up and close rank, weathering their relentless attacks. One of my general lost his life in a morale-sapping duel, but that's why I sent two to the left wing. An infantry unit was badly matched up against samurai and pushed back, exposing our left flank. A lesser commander would have committed all his forces and watched in horror, but a prudent one held back precious reserve to respond to changes in the battlefield. I send an unit of my own samurai up a stream to flank Shingen's samurai. In doing so, my own unit's rear and flank were exposed. But the mountainous terrain means that Takeda's cavalry cannot exploit them. And so my line held.

Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun (SJSoS) can delivery such exhilarating experience to those who are willing to take the role of a battlefield commander seriously. The fact that it covers such an interesting period of history as well makes it a must-played game for armchair generals.

Gameplay: This is where SJSoS shine. The game was built on the Pike and Shot engine, and worked flawlessly. While some strategems, e.g. fire attack, and naval battles are not part of the game, the effects of terrain, morale and flank/rear attack are plenty enough for engaging tactical battles. The addition of generals worked well without affecting the overall game balance. Those who rely on numerical superiority are in for a surprise as a smaller force, correctly employed, can quickly disintegrate a much bigger army. There are no easy battle and the AI opponent is decently capable. I have read two main complaints about the gameplay from various places online: (i) once engaged in close combat, the commander loses control over an unit unit that contest is decided, and (ii) units can chase a routed unit for several turns removing control from the commander. To these I have to respond strongly: THESE ARE THE REALITY OF THE BATTLEFIELD AT THE TIME. A commander should always hold back a small reserve force, and only commit that when absolutely necessary as it is his/her only mean of influencing the battle once it's started. A commander must always be prepared for part of his forces to be chasing the enemy in the heat of battle and prepare accordingly. Remember how Harold lost the Battle of Hasting? Even Alexander the Great almost lost the battle of Gaugamela as his cavalry chased the Persian king too far. Instead of complaining, players must master the game's mechanics (read the manual!) and plan their actions several steps forward to fully reap the rewards in SJSoS. Lastly, the game includes the Imjin war and a variety of units from Japan, Korea and Ming Dynasty which all have different strengths and weaknesses. This does increase the replayability of the game significantly.

Conclusions: SJSoS is a brilliant no-nonsense game for any history buffs or armchair generals. Casual gamers and thinkers should stay clear, but those who are interested in realistic tactical battles are in for a delicious treat.
