6.9     Glucagon for Hypoglycemia by EMT-Basic 

EMT STANDING ORDERS:

• Adult Patients

• Glucagon 1mg IM

• Recheck glucose 15 minutes after administration of glucagon

• May repeat glucagon 1mg IM if glucose level is less than 70mg/dl with continued altered mental status. 

• Pediatric Patients   

•  If patient is less than 20kg (44lbs) glucagon 0.5mg IM

• If patient is greater than 20kg (44lbs) glucagon 1mg IM 

• Recheck glucose levels 15 minutes after administration of glucagon 

• May repeat glucagon (dose above) if glucose level is less than 70mg/dl with continued altered mental status.  

NOTE:  Training in the use of glucagon is required on initial hire only.  The service is responsible for maintaining training records for all its EMT-Basics.
