This project was developed as part of the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering course ENGR 0716 The Art of Making: An Introduction to Hands-On System Design and Engineering.
Tablero de Granero is a tangible user interface that is designed to help young children learn different animal names in Spanish. Children can interact with the board by touching the strips on the animals, then a computer show a picture of the animal and play the animal's name in English then in Spanish.
Tablero de Granero aims to help young (primarily English-speaking) children learn how to say farm animals in Spanish.
Data shows that the younger a child is, the easier it is to learn a new language. By implementing foreign-language learning at an earlier age, children can develop the ability to deepen their sense of empathy, maintain cultural connections, and strengthen communication skills.
The board has a Makey Makey behind the handle on the back. Each of the wires is connected the MaKey MaKey corresponding to a specific button (labeled on the diagram) and a piece of conductive tape that runs to the front of the board. The conductive handle is connected to ground. When a child holds the handle and touches an animal on the front of the board, the circuit is completed, triggering the corresponding button.
The board is connected to a computer running the Makey Makey Interactive Poster app. When the signal is received from the board the corresponding animal picture is displayed on the screen and the audio file plays.
Tablero de Granero has great potential for future improvements.

Expand the topic - more than just animals
In-board audio - eliminate the need to be wired to a computer
