Dozens of concepts, patterns and compostions create a complete course of study for anyone wanting to start learning tabla. Along the way, Lockett teaches the complexities of Indian rhythmic composition in his trademark clear yet engaging style, opening doors to a larger understanding of some of the most sought-after and complex percussion concepts ever created. The book concludes with a section on other playing techniques, tuning and maintenance of the instrument.

Sadanand Naimpalli is an engineer by training and a musician by choice. A leading disciple of the legendary Guru Pandit Taranath, he is one of the leading tabla soloists and accompanists in the country today. He is a Top Grade artist of Akashwani and Doordarshan and a winner of several national awards. His workshops and lecture-demonstrations have made him one of the great educators of table. He also plays the pakhawaj.

The Brazil-Arab News Agency (ANBA) yesterday published an interview with Brazilian publisher Laura di Pietro, whose new venture, Editora Tabla, is set to release two Arabic books in Brazilian-Portuguese translation this month:

Zakir Hussain, I am sure you are familiar with this tabla maestro popularly know as Ustad Zakir Hussain who has earned great name and fame in Indian classical music. Awarded with Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan he is a tabla player, music composer, percussionist and a film actor.

I bought an e-reader (a Kindle, specifically) before coming to Spain, mostly to travel light (and have 3G internet access when necessary). It can't replace tactile books, but in the end I've found it really good for reading Spanish literature, because I have a Spanish dictionary as the default dictionary - so I can look up unfamiliar words with one click, instead of having a dictionary (or the internet) on hand. Since my enjoyment and willingness to trudge through a book is significantly affected by the number of unknown words, this has been awesome.

Hi Saracita! My wife has a Kindle and I agree that it is great for people who are mobile, but like to read (i.e. study abroad and expats). We have our account with the U.S., too, so that we can get harder-to-find-in-Spain English books for it. And I agree, the dictionary feature is pretty nice. I haven't yet fully assimilated it into my reading habits, so I can't say whether it solves the steady pace v. depth of understanding reading balance. I suspect there is a fundamental tension there that no amount of technology can solve. Still, good of you to point it out since one can find many of his books on kindle (though not yet this one).

I learn a lot by reading in Spanish. I tried to read El Asedio, but the vocab got to be a bit too much for me, what with the ship vocabulary that even my boyfriend didn't know.

I also read books that have been translated into Spanish. I find that every little bit helps, and especially if I really want to read the book. So I just pick it up in Spanish, and kill two birds with one stone.

Kaley, you are totally correct, every little bit helps. I'm no purist about reading translations. (Borges, in his autobiography, joked that he read Cervantes first in English, and only later in the original Spanish... and he preferred the English.) That said, be careful to keep in mind that the translations often maintain the underlying language's structures and idioms. Whereas an original Spanish-language book will have the more natural idioms of the native-speaking author. (I noticed this difference with Murakami's books. The translation was excellent, but it still felt like I was reading a non-Spanish author's book.)

Jos, muchas gracias por las sugerencias. Los dos me parecen muy interesantes. No soy muy aficionado de leer no ficcin (leo demasiados libros de historia para mi profesin), pero las experiencias de Prez-Reverte deben ser bastante apasionante. La serie de Prez Galds es mas a mi gusto. La apuntar.

Among Benares tabla players, Chhotelal was unusual. As a performer, he was both traditional and modern. While his base of material remained Benares, he also chose to play and teach material from other gharanas.

As a teacher, Chhotelal was equally exceptional among Benarsis. Though he gave all his students a foundation in Benares tabla, he also taught them according to their own strengths and preferences for material, rather than forcing them to learn one style, or limiting them to Benares material.

While most Benares tabla players continue to keep their material secret, Chhotelal felt it was important to share traditional material. This is clear from his decision to publish three major volumes of traditional material (discussed below).

His first book Tal Prasoon ( ), published in 2004, presents a foundation of traditional Benares tabla material, with basic definitions and theory. I personally learned most of the compositions in this book from Chhotelal, and have included them on this website.

This collection is significant because it presents a systematic approach to composing performance-style pieces, through model-examples in a traditional style. While there are many books of compositions, this kind of material is quite rare, especially from a recognized master.

The books listed in this column address music as political expression or focus to a significant degree on relationships between individual musicians or musical communities and the state. All of the works listed here were published within the previous half year. For a few citations, brief annotations are provided to help clarify political themes not implied by the titles. The list was compiled from a variety of bibliographic tools such as databases of book vendors, online catalogs, and Global Books in Print. Readers are welcome to submit additional titles to the editor (schroeder@library.ucsb.edu) for possible inclusion in the next issue of this journal.

Because printed music and books are classified - that is, grouped with similar items on the shelf - browsing can be an effective method for finding what you want.

If you're looking for percussion music in a particular medium, these classifications can guide you in the stacks (this is not a complete list):
