Tab Guardian — Privacy Policy

What this extension does
Tab Guardian is a parental-control browser extension. It monitors the currently open browser tab's title and URL and uses an AI content classifier (Google's Gemini API) to determine whether the tab matches categories the extension owner has configured as "distracting" (e.g. video games, gambling sites). Matching tabs are automatically closed.
What data is collected
The extension accesses:
Tab titles and URLs of the browser tabs open on the device where the extension is installed, in order to classify them.
For YouTube video tabs specifically, the extension also requests the video's public title and channel name from YouTube's public oEmbed endpoint.
The extension does not access page content, form data, passwords, cookies, browsing history beyond the currently open tab, or any personally identifying information about the user.
How data is used and shared
Tab titles and URLs are sent to Google's Gemini API (generativelanguage.googleapis.com) solely to classify whether the tab matches the configured block categories. This data is sent using the end user's own Gemini API key, which they provide and which is subject to Google's own API terms and privacy policy. No data is sent to the extension developer or to any third party other than Google (for classification) and YouTube (for video title lookups).
How data is stored
The Gemini API key, block-category configuration, allowlist, and a local log of closed tabs are stored using the browser's local extension storage (chrome.storage.local) on the device only. This data is not synced to other devices and is not transmitted to the extension developer. Classification results are cached locally for 30 minutes to reduce redundant API calls, then discarded.
Limited use compliance
The use of information received from Google APIs by this extension adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Your choices
You can disable the extension at any time via its Settings page, or remove it entirely via chrome://extensions, which deletes all locally stored data. You can also clear the API key and stored data manually from the Settings page.
