Like many parents of children with type 1 diabetes, I have often asked myself "How could this have happened?" and "Why my child?" - especially as the occurrence of type 1 diabetes in kids continues to increase.

The idea of a map where parents of kids with T1D can easily contribute basic info to help understand what causes this disease first came to me after reading about diabetes clusters, which left me wondering if there really is something in the water.

After thinking about this project, on and off for several years, things really hit close to home (literally) when the kid next door was diagnosed. Coincidence? Possibly. Who knows? So I finally pulled the trigger and, for what's its worth, have put this out there to see what happens.

There is no national T1D registry. There are diabetes registries but most are regional and rely on insurance company data (and anyone touched by type 1 diabetes knows how reliable insurance company info is... not!). The goal of the T1D Map is to create a user-generated, geographic registry of type 1 diabetes diagnoses, in children, in the US. You can help by adding a pin for your child, and by sharing the T1D Map with others in the T1D community.

This is far from scientific and I'm no medical researcher or data scientist, and the only resource invested has been time. But, I am an interested party - and I believe this is a way I might be able to help others. I'm just following the example set by my own T1D kid, who has participated in several diabetes studies and trials, including TrialNet, the Bionic Pancreas, and Libre CGM.
