The only thing I keep a dual boot for, currently, is Synthogy Ivory II. I play piano, and currently my instrument is just a midi controller, so I'm using Ivory for practicing, and rebooting into Windows every time. I also got back into transcribing and messing around with composing in Reaper recently, and it's great, but I'd like to be able to use Ivory locally within Reaper as well. I'd also really like to get EastWest Hollywood Orchestra working. Both use machine-based iLok, which is evidently working now in the latest wine-staging. I've been able to get the licenses transferred to the Linux machine, but am not able to run the VSTs themselves after trying Carla, LinVst and yabridge. (yabridge gives "0024:err:module:__wine_process_init failed to load", even in what I believe is the latest wine-staging.)

I'll be clear: I know this is very unlikely to work. But, I'm willing to try just about anything. Virtual machine? Second machine running Windows with its output routed back in through a USB sound card? I have a half decent old laptop sitting around that I could use for this. But my main machine has 32GB of RAM and an i7 -- getting things to run locally would be really ideal. To add another complication, ~10ms latency or less is necessary for piano practicing.

1. Macs / upgrading computers. Out of the question for now, as I know this laptop still has some years left, and I'm not ready to invest in a new machine till most software that I run is causing loud fan noises, or the hard drive gives up, or one of the USB ports stops working. As for PC or Mac, I'm not really sure if Macs are the right ones for me. Whenever I browse the Applevis forum, I often come across people talking about VoiceOver bugs on the Mac, some of them long-standing ones. Most people who find Macs problematic, would recommend Windows PC for more productive work instead. I began my computer journey with a PC, and have been using Windows for 16 years and counting. So all this may mean that a PC works better in my context than Macs. Also, due to my mobile life, laptops work better than desktop computers. I'd like to read about new CPU developments, but I won't be on the market soon.

As with all large sample-based instruments, installation is a bit of a snore; it took about two hours to feed all eleven DVDs into our machine. Once installed and authorised (via iLok), there were no hiccups. be457b7860
