If you want professional-grade communication with total noise isolation for focused work environments, choose SYNCO Xtalk XMax2; if you need open-ear audio freedom that keeps you aware of your surroundings while listening to high-fidelity music, choose JLab Epic Open Sport.
• SYNCO Xtalk XMax2: Delivers true full-duplex intercom and active noise cancellation for loud or critical environments but lacks the transparency needed for outdoor safety. Best for film crews, stage managers, or anyone needing absolute focus in noisy settings.
• JLab Epic Open Sport: Offers 30+ hours of battery life and Hi-Res audio certification with an open design for situational awareness, though it provides zero noise isolation. Best for runners, cyclists, and students who need to hear their environment while studying or working out.
The SYNCO Xtalk XMax2 is engineered primarily as a professional communication tool rather than a consumer entertainment device. Its defining feature is the true full-duplex wireless intercom system, which allows users to talk and listen simultaneously without push-to-talk delays. This specific capability makes it indispensable for scenarios where split-second coordination is required, such as on a movie set, during live stage performances, or within large sports teams. The closed dual-ear design, combined with AI noise cancellation and dual microphones, creates a soundproof bubble. This blocks out external chaos, allowing for crystal-clear voice transmission even when background noise is overwhelming. If your primary goal is to communicate effectively in a chaotic environment or to isolate yourself completely from distractions, this headset is built for that exact purpose.
For a student looking for the best over ear headphones for study, the Xtalk XMax2 offers a unique advantage: total silence. With its active noise cancellation and closed-back construction, it physically blocks out ambient sounds like traffic, conversations, or roommates. The low latency of just 45 milliseconds ensures that any video content or calls remain perfectly synced with audio. The inclusion of Bluetooth 5.3 means you can also switch seamlessly to listening to music or taking phone calls, providing a versatile experience for those who need to disconnect from the world to concentrate. However, the trade-off is that you are entirely cut off from your surroundings. You cannot hear someone calling your name or a car approaching, which makes it unsuitable for outdoor use or situations requiring situational awareness.

You should buy the SYNCO Xtalk XMax2 if your priority is deep focus, clear voice communication, and complete noise isolation. It is ideal for professionals in production, event management, or students who need to block out a busy library or dorm room. Conversely, you should skip this product if you plan to use it while running, cycling, or walking outside, as the closed design prevents you from hearing environmental hazards. It is also less suitable if you prefer an "open" feel where you can hear your own breathing or ambient room tone naturally. The heavy-duty build, weighing 194g, and the on-ear placement are designed for stability and comfort during long shifts, but they come at the cost of being unable to share audio with others nearby without using the intercom system specifically.
The JLab Epic Open Sport takes a completely different approach by prioritizing audio fidelity and environmental awareness through an open-ear design. These earbuds utilize 14.2mm speakers capable of reproducing frequencies up to 40kHz, earning them Hi-Res Audio certification. For listeners who care about detail, this means you get a rich, immersive soundstage that doesn't feel muffled or confined inside the ear canal. The open design is perfect for the "best open ear earbuds for study" category because it allows you to listen to music or lectures while remaining fully alert to your surroundings. You can hear the hum of the classroom, the door opening, or friends talking without removing your gear. This makes it a safe and practical choice for students who need to study in dynamic environments like coffee shops or shared living spaces where situational awareness is key.
Battery life is another area where these earbuds excel. With over 7 hours of playtime per charge and an additional 23+ hours provided by the charging case, you get more than 30 hours of total listening time. This is a massive advantage for multi-day commutes or long study sessions where finding a power outlet isn't guaranteed. The Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity supports multipoint pairing, allowing you to stay connected to both your laptop for research and your phone for messages simultaneously without switching devices manually. The flexible earhook design ensures they stay locked in place during vigorous activity, whether that's a HIIT workout or a long run. The IP55 rating confirms they are resistant to sweat and dust, making them durable enough for intense physical use.
However, the lack of noise isolation is a significant trade-off. Because there is no seal in the ear canal and no active noise cancellation, you will hear every bit of background noise around you. If you are trying to block out a barking dog or a loud HVAC system to focus on reading, these earbuds will not help. They are also not the best transparency mode headphone for study if you are trying to block the world out; instead, they are for those who want to hear the world while enjoying music. The controls are touch-based and customizable via the JLab App, offering presets like Bass Boost or Balanced, which gives you control over the sound profile. But unlike the SYNCO, there is no microphone array dedicated to isolating your voice for group comms in loud settings; the focus here is purely on personal audio enjoyment and safety.

I would choose the JLab Epic Open Sport for general daily use, particularly for a student or commuter who values safety and battery longevity. The ability to hear your surroundings while enjoying Hi-Res audio makes it a safer and more versatile companion for modern life. However, if I were preparing for a project that required intense concentration in a noisy environment, or if I needed to coordinate a team, I would immediately reach for the SYNCO Xtalk XMax2. For the specific use case of for study, the decision depends entirely on your environment. If you need to shut out the world, the SYNCO is the superior tool. If you prefer to keep one ear open to reality, the JLab is the better fit. In my opinion, for most people seeking the best over ear headphones for study or the best open ear earbuds for study, the JLab Epic Open Sport offers the right balance of performance, comfort, and safety without sacrificing too much audio quality.
The SYNCO Xtalk XMax2 uses active noise cancellation and a closed design to block almost all external sound, making it excellent for deep focus. The JLab Epic Open Sport has no noise cancellation and is designed to let sound in, so it is not suitable for blocking distractions.
The JLab Epic Open Sport offers a longer total battery life of over 30 hours with the charging case compared to the SYNCO Xtalk XMax2's 24-hour battery life, making JLab better for extended trips or weeks of use.
