oh Cardboard, how could I begin?

I am a multi-disciplinary artist who plays with themes of nostalgia, surrealism, anthropomorphism, and extravagance. My main mediums include illustration, 3D sculpture/mask-making with cardboard and paper maché, and video/music production. A goal of mine is to provoke a sense of déjà vu, by creating works that spark shared speculation of time and growth, creating a communal remembrance of a past that may or may not exist in parallel ways. I aim to experiment until things fit into place – often starting out with minimal established planning in order to allow my hands to take over and find what works.
Another goal of mine is to highlight the beauty of tedious tactile mediums and emphasize the importance of human imperfection. There’s power in working with a versatile yet abundant medium, one that is made into signs, slept on, recycled, shipped, and disregarded. I want my art to be dirty and textured, and to reflect the time and layers in the tactility visible to the eye.
I am influenced by the power of observation – everything I see in the world, from wish stones on sidewalks to elderly men in grocery stores to wilting leaves on bushes. All of this is reflected in the art I create and stories I wish to tell. I’m also influenced by the mix of macabre and absurd children’s literature I grew up with, and I plan to someday create a children’s book that draws from these inspirations. My art feels constantly in motion with pointillism blurring edges, watercolor leaking from borders, and corrugated cardboard curling from surfaces. I want my art to provoke a vulnerability through raw exposed materials, and remind people of the fundamental collaboration with a pair of hands.
