Sylvia Saalfeld (née Glaßer)
Full Professor - AI in medical applicatoins at University Hospital Kiel
My research interests cover medical image analysis touching imaging, reconstruction, registration, segmentation and visualization. A major application area is the analysis of cerebrovascular pathologies like intravascular aneurysmsm or arteriovenous malformations. Computer support allows for extraction of so much more information, guiding the doctors in diagnosis and therapy. For these pathologies, 3D models and blood flow simulations are conducted. Mesh extraction and analysis including sophisticated blood flow evaluation are part of my work as well. Especially deep learning for point clouds and surfaces are thrilling. I do also tackle more general research questions, i.e. processing and co-registration of multim-modal datasets to better characterize a certain disease or oncologic effect, segmentation of organs, tumors and metastases as well as interactive visual analysis and immersive virtual reality applications. My aim is to transfer research into the clinical practice.
Our work "Visual exploration of intracranial aneurysm blood flow adapted to the clinical researcher" by Benjamin Behrendt, Wito Engelke, Philipp Berg, Oliver Beuing, Ingrid Hotz, Bernhard Preim and Sylvi Saalfeld was awarded with the 1st place at the Dirk Bartz Competition / the Eurographics Medical Prize at this year's EuroVis Conference! The contribution describes an explorative system for the visualization of intracranial blood flow in aneurysms and was a joint project between my group at Forschungscampus STIMULATE, the University Hospital Magdeburg and the Linköping University in Sweden. You can see Ben's talk here.
