Dr. Sylvanus Kwaku Afesorgbor is an Associate Professor of Agri-Food Trade and Policy and Graduate Program Coordinator in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Guelph, Canada, and an International Associate at the Environment and Natural Resource Research Initiative (ENRRI-EfD Ghana). He was a Jean Monnet Fellow (2023/24) at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, European University Institute in Florence, Italy. His research and teaching focus on international trade, political economy, international development, energy and the environment, food and agriculture, and meta-analysis.
Dr. Afesorgbor began his academic journey at the University of Ghana, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Statistics. He then pursued a Master of Arts in Development Economics at Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and later completed a PhD in Economics and Business at Aarhus University in Denmark. After completing his PhD, Dr. Afesorgbor was awarded the prestigious Max Weber Postdoctoral Fellowship at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, and subsequently held a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Tuborg Centre for Globalization and Firms at Aarhus University.
Dr. Afesorgbor has published extensively in leading academic journals, including World Development, Energy Policy, Journal of African Economies, Review of Development Economics, European Journal of Political Economy, Environmental and Resource Economics, The World Economy, and others. He has also reviewed articles for top-tier economic journals, including the Journal of Development Economics, the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, the American Political Science Review, World Development, Energy Economics, Energy Policy, and several other notable journals. He served as a Guest Editor for The World Economy and as an Associate Editor for the journal Climate and Development (2022-2025).
In addition to his academic work, he is Chair of the International Agricultural Trade Research Consortium (IATRC) and Executive Founder of the Centre for Trade Analysis and Development (CeTAD Africa), a Ghana-based international think tank. Dr. Afesorgbor also serves as a consultant to international organizations, including the African Development Bank (Côte d'Ivoire), the International Trade Centre (Switzerland), and the African Economic Research Consortium (Kenya).
