Medical Pathway Science Courses

The Pathway Sequence is:

1. Medical Biology

        • alternative: Accelerated Biology

2. Medical Chemistry

        • alternative: Chemistry Honors

3. Biotechnology

        • alternative: AP Biology, AP Chemistry, CTE: Healthcare Essentials and Medical Terminology

4. Anatomy & Physiology Honors

        • alternative: CTE: Medical Assistant Administration and Clinical

In conjunction with these science courses, students in the pathway may also take the following four Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses, which are UC/CSU approved “G” elective courses. Students may receive community college credit for CTE courses.

· Healthcare Essentials

· Medical Terminology

· Medical Assistant: Clinical

· Medical Assistant: Administration

In addition to the rigorous courses, students enrolled in the Pathway have the opportunity to take part in various mentorships and internships. Currently, the San Ysidro High School Medical Pathway has partnerships with UCSD Medical Center - Hillcrest, Kaiser Permanente, La Maestro Clinic, American Heart Association, SNAP, San Ysidro Health, and San Ysidro Teen Clinic.

9th Grade: Medical Biology - Ms. Hogan

Learn about living things with a medical perspective by incorporating the ecology of the mouth, nutrition, human impact on medical advances and link to illnesses. Students may attend field trips in the fall and/or spring to the hospitals to expose them to various medical careers.

Freshmen are highly encouraged to join the MEDICS Club to begin volunteer work.

10th Grade: Medical Chemistry - Ms. Northum

Learn about molecules, chemical reactions and equilibrium with a medical perspective. Students may take a field trip in the spring to Southwestern College and tour the medical program classrooms.

Sophomores are expected to be involved in MEDICS Club to obtain Medical Pathway Completer status by graduation.

Optional concurrent enrollment in Healthcare Essentials & Medical Terminology* or Medical Assisting & Clinical* with Ms. Nelson.

11th Grade:

Biotechnology - Dr. Gil

This second year life science biology class will incorporate current biotechnological techniques used in various industries, thereby exposing students to new careers in allied healthcare and STEM.

Students may have speakers come into their classes and talk about various medical topics and may attend field trips in the fall and/or spring to the hospitals to expose them to various medical careers. In the spring, Juniors will be prepare for the Kaiser Summer Urban Fellowship, where they will be exposed to various hospital experiences and are mentored by Kaiser Permanente doctors.

The biotechnology course offers community college credit via Miramar Community College by way of examination at the end of the school year to students that earn an A or B for both semesters of the course.

Optional concurrent enrollment in Healthcare Essentials & Medical Terminology* with Ms. Nelson.

12th Grade: Anatomy & Physiology - Ms. Saetia

Students will be partake in internships in the fall and spring semesters at designated partnership locations. Students are selected based on the following criteria: Medical Pathway and CTE classes completed, years of participation in the MEDICS Club, GPA, attendance, and citizenship. Transportation to all internships is the responsibility of the student. Students will be given an opportunity to complete only one internship however, if other students are not qualified a student may be chosen for two. Students may be disqualified from internship opportunities for academic and/or citizenship issues.

Optional concurrent enrollment in Medical Assistant: Administration & Clinical* with Ms. Nelson.

*Students that complete a Career Technical Education course (HCE, MT, MA, & MC) with an A or B grade are eligible to register the credit at Southwestern Community College.
