Welcome if you are new to SafeSpace!
We hope you all had a great holiday break and a Happy New Year!!!
Alum Spotlight: Lena Kalotihos, Class of 2020, Menlo-Atherton High School
Attending Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY
Covid college experience: Relatively speaking, I’m making the most of it! I feel incredibly grateful to actually be on campus with my peers, so I can’t really complain. Making friends has been a bit more difficult than I thought, since our campus is not running at full capacity. Yet, I’ve taken advantage of this by throwing myself into my academics and really taking every academic opportunity that comes my way.
Advice for high school seniors: Document your experience. You’re going to want to remember this last semester of high school forever — especially considering these unique times. Whether that be via pictures, videos, writings, or anything else of that nature. I find myself looking back on these artifacts when I’m missing home.
Redesigning the website: When I left for college last fall, I thought my work with SafeSpace was essentially done with. I was a bit sad about this, because I love my SafeSpace family and the work we do. So when Annie reached out to me about redesigning our website, I was ecstatic about the opportunity. Combining two of my favorite things, computational work and SafeSpace, was such a fulfilling experience that allowed me to feel much more connected to my home as I was away at college.
"SafeSpace is where we make change with friends and enjoy a good meal."

We were invited to screen the QuaranTEEN Diaries to a fellow nonprofit, Crack the Wellness Code on January 31st! We were their first guest for 2021 and feel honored.
As soon as we are out of the purple tier, we are going to partner with the RWC and EPA location within the Boys and Girls club to do another kitchen takeover. Members really enjoyed the opurunity to serve so many families alongside fellow SafeSpace members!
Little Library for the EPA community: we are currently on their waiting list to be matched with a family to build and supply books

The Pet of the Month is named Sugar! She is a maltese terrier mix and is a service animal. Sugar has been very thereuptic especially through Coronavirus as she is always there to comfort our family. Having a dog has been awesome and she definetly keeps us entertained at all times! - Conor Burns
Try meditating once a week for at least 10 minutes!

Reza - Community Committee, Menlo Park:
The MP Community Committee has been hard at work trying to knock out multiple initiatives! Because we’re such a large group we decided that it would be best to have a few different initiatives going on in the background. All the projects currently going on are doing great, but notably, the presentation regarding eating disorders has been making tremendous progress. During our last meeting, we laid out all the plans for the QuaranTEEN Diaries video premiere happening on January 28th, as well as starting to do some one-on-ones with the committee members. I’m absolutely amazed and proud of the MP Community Committee for the spectacular work they’ve been doing. Keep up the good work SYAB!!
We will be presenting an internal workshop for all SYAB members on Eating Disorders: Feb. 25th, 8pm-9pm. Zoom link will be added to the SYAB calendar.
FYI: Eating Disorder Awareness week: Feb. 22nd - 28th.
Sophia - Community Committee, San Mateo:
What we've been working on recently is mental health policy. We're just starting to reach out to local candidates who won their races and form relationships with their offices. We're still in the planning and learning stages because most of us don't have an abundance of experience with policy. Before, we actually made bookmarks to pass out to local bookstores, libraries, and schools to increase the awareness of SafeSpace and provide hotline numbers to the community. We're in the stage of getting those out to local businesses.
Mira & Novak - Resources Committee, San Mateo:
The resources committee has worked to create resources that tailor to the needs of specific schools, like how to start mental health conversations and how to relieve stress in quarantine, in order to create more inclusive and comfortable communities. Moving forward, we are working on compiling an extensive directory of mental health-related resources, including hotlines, podcasts, and songs (just to name a few). We are striving to make it accessible to anyone interested and looking for helpful resources to reach out for help, receive advice, or simply lift their mood! Our goal is, through the exhaustive list of various resources, everyone who utilizes our directory will find something that tailors to their particular need. Check out our resources on our new website under the Resource tab!
Kai - Pride Committee:
The Pride Committee is an affinity group focusing on mental health in the LGBTQ+ community. We started in June of 2020 by planning a pride celebration, and decided to continue our work into the school year. We taught a workshop about ally ship to the LGBTQ+ community, did a fundraiser (raised $700+!) for the Trevor Project, and created resources regarding terminology, representation, and services available. The Pride Committee continues to work for the cause of LGBTQ+ mental health, and is currently planning a half day conference in May or June to celebrate Mental Health Awareness month & Pride!
Riley C. & Claire - Social Media Committee:
The social media team has been hard at work revamping our Instagram page. We have been lucky to work with a designer, who has helped us design templates to help create a more cohesive look for our feed! In the future, we hope to continue to use our social media page as a place to show the community what we are working on as an organization amongst our numerous committees with many different initiatives! We ask that you share your everyday pictures with us so we can use them in our posts!
Mira - Digital Media Committee:
In 2020 and through 2021, the digital media committee is striving to share perspectives of those who are less represented and encourage mental health conversations through creative mediums. At the end of January, we will be releasing the first episode of Beyond the Picket Fence, a podcast by teens, for teens, created to discuss various challenges related to mental health. We are also looking to create and distribute other easy-access content across social media and other platforms in the upcoming year.
Who remembers announcements about submitting an art piece for Help@hand Mental Health Anthology Project?!

The Digital Committee is working on creating a TikTok acocunt to expand the SafeSpace platform. Members, start brainstorming! The first planning meeting will be on Wednesday, 10th @ 8pm.
It's not too late to join in on the fun!

POSITIVE COPING STRATEGIES DURING QUARANTINE
I have been feeling very down and isolated these past few months, and I wanted to find a way to feel better and more excited. I came across a DBT skill used in many types of therapy: engage in pleasant activities. At first I wasn’t sure what activities to do, for nothing felt joyful and I didn’t have many hobbies. However, I had recently been purchasing a lot of handmade earrings seeing instagram stories about teens starting small businesses, so I decided to be creative and hand-make some earrings!
I starting playing with polymer clay in December and trying out different designs. After a few weeks and learning how to best paint and sculpt my earrings, I decided to open an Etsy account!
My classic earrings and first made ones are frog earrings, and I have since added customizable lgbtq+ identity and shape earrings as well and night sky earrings and donuts! Whenever I have time I am always working on new designs.
Below is the link to my Etsy shop where you can buy earrings that I will deliver to your house (if you live in the Bay Area) or drop it off at SafeSpace for you to pick up. Please feel free to share this link with friends or anyone who might be interested, but be aware that I will need to ship the earrings if they do not live nearby. Shipping is free! However it takes longer.
Use code YAYFIVEOFF for $5 off your order! If you don’t want to/cannot pay, just email me or contact me through Etsy and I’ll give you a bigger discount or make the earrings for you for free! I really love making them and it makes me feel happy, so the money is not important to me.
Contact me with any questions or to make a custom order not on my Etsy! Thanks for checking out my shop and I hope you order!

Core and I read every end of the year survey that was submitted. Many of you asked for more educational workshops for SYAB members. We decided to offer at least one educational workshop, presentation and/or a guest speaker each and every month for 2021! So stay tuned, we have a lot of exciting topics to cover!
If there's something you'd like to learn more about, don't hestiate to ask! You can always reach out to your committee lead, submit a request using our virutal feedback form (link in every weekly update) or reach out to Annie.
Thank you for completing the workshop survey.
Let's plan 5150 Part 2!
