PLEASE NOTE:THE DETAILED ROUTE DESCRIPTIONS HAVE NOT BEEN FINALISED AND MAY BE INACCURATE PLEASE CONTACT US IF YOU THINK YOU ARE USING THEM TO RECCE BY OR EVEN BETTER LET US KNOW ABOUT INACCURACIES PARTICULARLY IF YOU HAVE BEEN ON THE ROUTE RECENTLY MANAGING TO ACCURATELY MEASURE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION ON THE GROUND

These descriptions are for a more easy going traverse or recce, rather than a technical, record breaking one and have been written in the aboriginal style of 'song lines'...basically singing yourself from feature to feature. There are plenty of GPX lines available to follow and the grid references for each summit are provided in a table elsewhere on this site so you may decide that you don't need these notes. I like to work the other way and have GPX as backup for the dark and clag, and to make my day fun in the mountains by using these song lines. Those perplexed by this term read Song Lines by Bruce Chatwin.. it's how the ancients in Britain would have travelled and exchanged route information. Also read the Old Straight Track by Alfred Watkins. Basically think visualisation and observation of the varied landscape. Combine with GPX/map/compass when the clag is down. The notes don't include accurate bearings..just general direction. NB I will be adding grid references for summits and road junctions but these are available on another document here at the moment. All distances are approximate and I haven't added ascension/height gain. So for a technique older than map and compass itself…this is the way I completed the SWT. I never thought "how far is left to do'. I just 'sung and danced' over the mountains, section by section. I never thought about how many kilometres were done and how many km were left to do...it was just literally one step at a time...from one feature to another...and it worked. Combine these notes by looking at the map before you recce and turn on your GPX watch as a backup or use that as much as you like... it's your journey.. get comfortable as you are in for the long run. Keep eating and drinking and maintaining an awareness of where you are. Enjoy. PCD.
