If you want a dedicated underwater audio solution for lap training and open-water swimming, choose swimaudios Swimming Ear Buds; if you need lightweight on-ear headphones for daily commuting, travel, or listening to music in dry environments, choose JBL Tune 510BT.
• swimaudios Swimming Ear Buds: The standout strength is its IPX8 waterproof rating and bone conduction technology that allows for clear audio up to 3 meters underwater with 32GB of internal storage; the trade-off is an open-ear design that sacrifices deep bass isolation and relies on Bluetooth 5.4 which cannot function while submerged.
• JBL Tune 510BT: Its biggest asset is a massive 40-hour battery life and signature Pure Bass sound delivered via dynamic drivers in a foldable, cushioned on-ear package; however, it offers zero water resistance and cannot be used for swimming or any wet activity.
• The Verdict on Fit: The swimaudios model is the only logical choice for serious aquatic athletes and triathlons, whereas the JBL Tune 510BT is the superior pick for general entertainment, office work, and casual listening where comfort and bass are priorities.
This product is engineered for a very specific niche: people who need to hear their music while submerged. The defining feature here is the combination of bone conduction technology and an IPX8 waterproof seal. Unlike standard earbuds that sit inside your ear canal, these use an open-ear design that sits outside the ear, allowing sound to travel through your cheekbones directly to your inner ear. This is critical for safety in open water, as it keeps your ears partially open to ambient sounds, but more importantly, it allows the device to function when Bluetooth signals fail underwater. You can load over 4,000 songs, podcasts, or audiobooks directly into the built-in 32GB memory. Once you hit the pool or ocean, the Bluetooth connection drops automatically, and the device switches to MP3 mode, ensuring your playlist never skips during a sprint or a flip turn.

The build quality reflects its athletic purpose. The frame is made of flexible titanium, which is both lightweight at just 1.4 ounces and durable enough to withstand the rigors of triathlon training. It stays secure during freestyle strokes and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) without putting pressure on the ears. With a battery life averaging 15 hours, it can handle long endurance sessions or multiple days of training before needing a recharge, which takes about 1.5 hours via a magnetic USB cable. The Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity also ensures that when you are out of the water, pairing with phones, tablets, or smartwatches is fast and stable with low latency.
However, this is not a product for everyone. If you are looking for deep, thumping bass or noise isolation to block out a busy gym, this will not satisfy you. Bone conduction inherently delivers a different sound profile, and the open-ear design means you will hear everything around you. Furthermore, the controls rely on physical buttons rather than touch sensors, which some users might find less intuitive for quick skips, though it prevents accidental triggers when wet. This device is strictly for those who prioritize functionality in the water over traditional audio fidelity.
In stark contrast to the specialized swimmer, the JBL Tune 510BT is designed for the everyday listener who values portability and classic audio performance. These are on-ear headphones featuring plush cushioned ear cups that wrap around the ears rather than going inside them. They utilize dynamic drivers with a size of 32 millimeters to produce what JBL calls "Pure Bass Sound." This results in a richer, deeper audio experience that is ideal for pop, rock, hip-hop, and electronic music. The frequency range spans from 20Hz to 20,000Hz, covering the full spectrum of human hearing, and the sensitivity of 103.5 dB ensures loud, clear playback even at lower volumes.
The most compelling argument for these headphones is the battery life. With an average playtime of 40 hours, they far outlast most competitors in the wireless category. A quick charge of just five minutes provides two additional hours of listening, making them perfect for long flights, commutes, or days spent working without access to a power outlet. The foldable design adds to their utility; they collapse down to fit easily into the included protective carrying case, making them an excellent travel companion. They also support multi-point connectivity, meaning you can switch seamlessly between a tablet for video streaming and a smartphone for incoming calls without disconnecting and reconnecting manually.
These headphones are best suited for children and adults who spend their time in dry environments. They are marketed as lightweight, weighing 0.5 kg total, and are designed for all-day wear. The inclusion of voice assistant support like Google Assistant and Siri makes them convenient for hands-free operation. However, they lack any water resistance rating, so a splash of rain or sweat could damage the electronics. They are not suitable for sports involving water, and the on-ear design, while comfortable, may cause fatigue for some users during extended wear compared to the pressure-free feeling of the swimaudios bone conduction option.

After analyzing the specifications and intended use cases for both devices, I would buy the swimaudios Swimming Ear Buds if my primary goal was to get a child involved in swimming or triathlon training. The ability to listen to music underwater is a game-changer for aquatic sports, and the 32GB storage ensures there is no reliance on a phone tether. However, for general daily use, I would choose the JBL Tune 510BT because of its superior battery life and the immersive bass experience that bone conduction simply cannot replicate. Ultimately, the swimaudios unit is the best sports earbuds for children who love the water, while the JBL headphones serve as the ultimate lightweight headphones for children who prefer indoor activities or dry environments. If you need rotatable ear cups earphones for children to wear comfortably during homework or gaming, the JBL is the way to go, but for the pool, nothing beats the swimaudios.
No, the JBL Tune 510BT has no water resistance rating and should never be submerged. Only the swimaudios model is rated IPX8 for underwater use.
The JBL Tune 510BT offers 40 hours of playtime compared to the 15 hours of the swimaudios, making it the clear winner for long trips without charging.
Both models are designed to be lightweight, but the swimaudios uses an open-ear bone conduction design that puts no pressure on the ear canal, which many parents prefer for active kids.
No, you can simply connect the magnetic USB cable to a computer and drag and drop MP3 files directly onto the 32GB storage without needing proprietary software.
