Language Acquisition
Description
The Learner Profile and Position Statement were written for Professor Kimberly Todd's Second Language Acquisition (TESL 505) in Spring 2017. The Learner Profile emphasizes my proficiency in drawing attention to the learner's social, cultural, and linguistic context, which is central to a student's second language acquisition. The Position Statement illustrates my perspectives on the developmental stages of acquisition, the nature of second language proficiency, and its origin.Â
Reflection
Previously, I believed that learning an L2 (second language) was solely based on learning how to manipulate phonology, phonetics, syntax, grammar, or apply vocabulary learning in chronological sequence. After writing the Learner Profile and Position Statement, I understand that acquiring a second language is a compassionate experience that entails a student adapting to the L2 culture while maintaining their native cultural norms and identity. I must also recognize students, affective (e.g., motivation) and cognitive factors (e.g., English proficiency) impact the process of SLA. Implementing affective and cognitive factors may spark the students' intrinsic motivation toward L2 learning and enhance their personal goals towards their L2 endeavors. Second Language Acquisition begins with our God-given innate abilities through our mother tongue. In teaching and learning an L2, it is vital to demonstrate Christ-like attributes.
Application
As a future TESOL instructor, I will not rely on the "cookie-cutter curriculum" to teach my ESOL students. Instead, I will utilize supplemental resources and a curriculum that reflects students' social and cultural perspectives and learning styles. Whether a student is a kinesthetic, auditory, or visual learner, my future objectives, lessons, and assessments will be tailored to meet the student's SLA needs. To remain current with the TESOL community, I will join the TESOL International Association to attend annual conferences, participate in cybernetic sessions, and stay current with TESOL resources (i.e., TESOL quarterly journal). I understand what I have shared is achievable in a single school year. However, with the Lord's help, effective planning and necessary modifications will result in continued growth in understanding SLA's process. Most importantly, I will implement the qualities of love, which is beautifully summarized in Galatians 5:22, "Love is kind, patient, forgiving, joyful, and forbearance" (New International Version).
