The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) has adopted statewide learning standards for K-12 students. The following links provide some examples of learning standards that align to media literacy and digital citizenship instruction.
Media literacy is about the ability to use and create information and ideas in a complex digital world. The core skills and habits of mind for media literacy complement virtually every content area in K12 education. With a focus on secondary English Language Arts, social studies, and health, educators in this project sought to identify and share lessons and resources which support the integration of media literacy learning in these three content areas.
Washington State defines digital citizenship and media literacy in statute.
Digital Citizenship "includes the norms of appropriate, responsible, and healthy behavior related to current technology use, including digital and media literacy, ethics, etiquette, and security. Digital citizenship includes the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, develop, produce, and interpret media, as well as Internet safety and cyberbullying prevention and response.”
Media Literacy "is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create and act using a variety of forms of communication. Media literacy includes the ability to understand how and why media messages and images are constructed and for what purposes they are used."
