Welcome to our little blog! We will attempt to keep family, friends and any interested folks updated on our sailing travels aboard our good little ship, AKA S/V Merrion.
As most of you probably know Travis and I (Marta) quite well I won't bore you with lengthy details about our background, our composting head or Travis's favorite foods.
I will tell you how we started on this wild journey aboard our sailboat. Travis has had the dream to sail for quite a few years, I on the other hand never dreamed this would become my life. Back when we met in 2010, Travis presented the idea of owning a sailboat and exploring the world.. I'm certain he would have dumped me if I hadn't been receptive to the idea. Fast forward a few years.. we fell in love, got married in 2014 and moved to a port town (Juneau, Alaska). The sailing dream has slowly become an exciting reality for me as well, one which certainly makes me hesitant at times, but committed all the same. Late summer 2015 we found the perfect sailboat, a 1988 Fraser 41 named Merrion. She is a heavy hulled, blue water cruiser that was built by the Dekleer brothers in British Columbia,Canada. Travis and his dad, Larry sailed her up to Juneau and we moved aboard permanently in October 2015. From then on we saved every penny we could to pay off lingering student loans, the boat and outfit her for bluewater cruising. July 17th, 2017 we shoved off from Juneau bound for Washington, California and then Baja, Mexico. As well as hopeful plans to cross the pacific ocean into the South Pacific.
I left out many details about our complete lack of sailing experience, our wonderful time living and sailing in Alaska and our cute little dog, Teddy. If your curious about those lengthy details just come find us and share a cup of tea or a glass of wine and we will fill you in!
Hope you enjoy the contents of our little blog.
Cheers, Marta & Travis
