My training techniques
I am NOT a 100% positive reinforcement, positive-only trainer. If this is something you are uncomfortable with, you are welcomed to consult with me about my training techniques and methods, before signing up for a session. If you are open and still interested in my services, continue reading.
I approach training with a balanced method. This means that I will teach the dog what is right and also punish a dog when it does something wrong when necessary. It is important that the dog KNOWS what is expected of him first before deciding to punish him.
A good example of how punishment should be - A dog has been well trained in recall indoors, and if he doesn't come when called indoors, I will give him a correction for not coming.
In contrast, a bad example how punishment is - the dog isn't well trained in recall yet but I still punish him for not coming when called.
I also am an advocate of fulfilling your dog's individual needs mentally and emotionally. This is what I call behavior management instead of 'training'. Creating activities for your dog to satisfy his needs is more effective in reducing bad behavior than punishing/limiting/suppressing/controlling. In my sessions with most clients, I will recommend suitable activities/toys that will work for them. When given these positive outlets, 80% of bad behavior almost always disappears.Â
