Journey of SUU Table Tennis Club
My goal for this project was to promote and advertise to get as many people to join my table tennis club as possible. I then continued to hold weekly 90 minute practices where I taught and helped club members improve their skills, then organized games so they could practice those skills. I hosted a school table tennis tournament where players could come to tryout for varsity positions. Lastly, I planned to train this varsity group of 8 people for 2 months so they could be ready for a Divisional tournament at the end of November.
For all this to be possible, I had to raise about $570 dollars. What I did to raise this money included: submitting forms to the school to ask for funds to help (they paid up to half the $570), cleaning up after two football games ($200), and asking varsity members and community members to donate to our club during the school tournament. I asked the summer games if we could use their table tennis tables for our practices and games, and I registered our university for the Divisional tournament and obtained jerseys and equipment for the varsity team.
Why Ping Pong?
When I was thinking of what project I should do for edge, they told me to do something that I loved and would be motivated to do well at. I chose ping pong because I have played this sport for years and I wanted to find more players that I could meet and play with. It seemed like something I could try to coach and see how my leadership skills were. I wanted to help others around me to meet new people. Starting this club just seemed to be the thing I would look back on and be proud.
Challenges
Not everything went like I thought it would. Starting a club and training a varsity team took a lot more time than I assumed it would. I realized that I was bad at delegating as I tried to do everything myself. I still accomplished everything I wanted, but if I did this over again I would give different members of my club different responsibilities.
Benefit others
I believe this club has benefited everyone that has taken part in it. Especially my varsity members. We developed a tight bond that continues today. We had a great experience improve our talents and testing them against other schools. Members in my club experienced the same blessing though on a smaller scale with the school tournament. The school was represented in another state.
Benefit Me
I learned how to be a more effective leader. I learned that delegation doesn't make everything go right to your liking, but makes it so you accomplish less. I learned how to be a better teacher. I benefited from this by deepening my love for the sport of Table Tennis.
"We have been putting in two good practices a week with some varsity guys doing several more on their own! I'm really excited to see how we fair against the other schools in our division!" 11/18/17
"The tournament went really well. We did much better than anyone expected us to and defeated our rival in a finals doubles match! This is a weekend I seriously won't forget. My kids will know this story word for word" 11/27/17
