SUU Baja Racing is a social group at Southern Utah University that designs, builds, and races a baja style vehicle once a year at a national SAE organized competition. Members are current students of the university, who dedicate their time to learning the skills necessary to design, and build a vehicle, meeting SAE requirements. Students not only learn CAD modeling and shop skills, but find a place where they can meet students with common interests, degrees, and goals.
SUU Baja Racing meets every Tuesday and Thursday to design, build, and test a baja style vehicle. During meetings, team members learn CAD modeling skills, fabrication skills, and effective team work strategies. Fabrication skills include basic metal working, welding, plasma cutting, and more.
Members are given tasks to accomplish on the vehicle, determined by what needs to be completed to meet the set deadlines. Team members are encouraged to ask questions, and learn from each other.
The completed vehicle will travel to a national SAE organized event, in which the team competes against 100 other universities. At this event, the team participates in several challenges including an acceleration test, hill climb, suspension
and travel test, and a maneuverability course. The biggest event is the 4-hour endurance race held on a custom-made track on the last day of the competition. Drivers race wheel to wheel on challenging terrain, competing to see who can make it the furthest.
