One fundamental approach of SUSTAIN is the capacity-building aspect.
In order to reach the widest audience possible, we aim at training future trainers to provide SECAP-trainings to members of Project Management Units (PMUs) of IFAD projects and their “ecosystem”, above all consultants, implementing partners, government staff.
Three Training of Trainers have taken place, two for English-speaking trainers in Johannesburg (South Africa) in 2023 and in Bangkok (Thailand) 2024 and the third one in Dakar (Senegal) in October 2023 for French-speaking trainers.
Future trainers are guided by experts and they deepen their knowledge on a comprehensive set of training materials composed of 10 modules, but they also learn facilitation and participatory techniques.
Insights from SUSTAIN Training of Trainers (ToT)
HELVETAS, together with its service providers – Clear AA, Clear FA, and VCB-N have successfully conducted a series of Training of Trainers (ToT) events to enhance the Social, Environmental, and Climate Assessment Procedures (SECAP) courses. These events have emphasized the value of collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and continuous improvement in preparing future trainers and refining SECAP training materials.
Johannesburg ToT
The inaugural ToT in Johannesburg united 30 representatives from diverse organizations across Africa, Asia, and Europe. The event served to prepare future SECAP trainers and refine the training content. Discussions focused on optimizing delivery methods, such as online interactive webinars, aligning content with PMU roles, and ensuring trainers are well-prepared. The event concluded with plans to extend the training duration and explore alternative delivery methods for comprehensive coverage.
Dakar ToT
The Dakar training session, starting on October 24, 2023, involved experts testing modules for PMUs and their associated experts. Participants engaged in community-building activities and discussed the evolution of SECAP, alignment with national legislation, and new climate change standards. Key takeaways included the need for ongoing climate education, the complexity of SECAP standards, and the importance of addressing stakeholder complaints. Positive feedback led to plans for updating training modules and creating participant handbooks.
Bangkok ToT
Held in Bangkok from May 6-9, 2024, the second English-speaking ToT brought together numerous participants for dynamic discussions on SECAP and IFAD standards. Early sessions focused on community building, national requirement alignment, climate change risks, and stakeholder engagement. Participants gained insights into agriculture's role in climate solutions and effective grievance mechanisms. Later sessions emphasized the connections between social, environmental, and climate impacts, as well as procurement integration and strategic project design. The event concluded with reflections on the collective journey, inspiring participants to embrace future challenges.
Moving Forward
These ToT events have advanced the SECAP training initiative, fostering a robust and supportive Community of Practice. They highlighted the need for high-quality training materials, well-prepared trainers, and effective stakeholder engagement. Future efforts will focus on building the strong foundations established through these collaborative experiences.
