After the end of World War II, the United States became recognized as a world power and ended its long-held tradition of isolationism. The US also joined the United Nations.

During this period, slavery was abolished and the 48 contiguous states were readmitted to the Union, and women’s suffrage and the prohibition of alcohol were introduced.

The United States has grown into one of the world's preeminent powers. Its citizens enjoy unparalleled opportunities for personal advancement and wealth, but the nation faces daunting challenges, including depletion of natural resources, pollution of the environment, and social inequality that perpetuates areas of poverty and blight.

The Constitution gives the President broad executive power, including naming ambassadors and making treaties with foreign nations. He also can veto laws passed by Congress. The first ten amendments to the Constitution are known as the Bill of Rights and guarantee more protection for individual freedoms.

The country's population is spread across 24 distinct regions, from the largely flat and densely populated Interior Lowlands to the upland mountain systems of the Appalachian Mountains. Each region reflects the different cultures that have contributed to the United States' diverse national character. The United States is the dominant power on the planet in all categories of strength: military, economic, and diplomatic. The day of December 7, 1941, lives in infamy but by the time it ended, the country’s leaders were already committed to installing America as the pre-eminent world colossus.

American economic dominance is rooted in its vast natural resources, highly developed industry, and unparalleled access to global markets. But it also owes something to the nation’s cultural influence, which extends around the globe. People listen to American pop music in Iran, watch movies in China and drink Coke in Indonesia. They spend more on defense as a percentage of GDP than the next 15 nations combined and possess the most advanced weapons technologies — precision-guided missiles, massive carrier fleets, overwhelming firepower, and military space dominance.

The United States has a diverse cultural heritage, reflecting large waves of immigration from Europe. The country is also a highly industrialized nation with one of the world’s largest economies.

The country has a long history of military interventions, and its use of weapons like cluster bombs, fuel-air bombs, and depleted uranium has resulted in massive civilian casualties and lasting environmental pollution. However, in the face of contemporary security threats and a rise in populist politics, Americans appear to be increasingly dissatisfied with their country’s current position in the world.

The United States has maintained a strong global presence in terms of foreign trade, with the country’s massive economy making it the world’s most important importer and exporter of computers and electrical machinery, cars, chemicals, food, live animals, and weapons. It has also achieved institutional hegemony over the international economic and financial system by establishing the Bretton Woods System and the International Monetary Fund, imposing weighted voting systems and arrangements for international organizations, and maintaining domestic laws that put U.S. national interest above international law.

The United States is considered one of the world’s great nations. Most Americans say that the country has good standing in the world but fewer than half of those surveyed express very high levels of confidence in the nation’s future.
