Objective: The project aimed to identify opportunities or gaps in the timber market by analyzing import and export data in India over the last three years (2020-2022).

Methodology: An in-depth study of the timber trade, focusing on both import and export values in US dollars, was conducted to understand market trends and potential areas for intervention or growth.

Findings:

• Increasing Import Values: There has been a consistent increase in timber imports, indicating a growing domestic demand that is not met by local production.

• Yearly Data:

  • 2020: Imports at $78,870,315 and exports at $32,951,046.94.

  • 2021: Imports increased to $101,636,275, with exports also rising to $64,140,778.03.

  • 2022: Imports further rose to $125,563,722.64, and exports reached $77,633,105.12.

Analysis:

• Market Dependency: The data suggests an increasing dependency on imported timber, which can signal a market gap in domestic timber production and supply.

• Export Growth Potential: While exports are growing, there's a significant trade imbalance, which could be an opportunity for increasing local production to reduce import dependency and possibly enhance exports.

Opportunities:

• Bamboo as an Alternative: The gap in timber supply presents an opportunity for bamboo to be positioned as an alternative material, offering a sustainable and potentially more cost-effective option for the industry.
