Having studied a History degree (2:2, 1996, Southampton) and continued as a hobby (I'm a keen attender of the History Teachers Book Club online), it's no surprise that my love of the subject has turned into something I want to share with others.
Qualified to PGCE level (Pass, 2016, Portsmouth), I've been teaching History for the past two years to an online based pupil at Year 6-7. At my client's request we've focused on Modern History (World War Two) and are now working our way through the Cold War.
Additionally my PGCE subject specialism was English (with placements in ESOL, A-level English Literature and Adult Literacy classes) in Further Education Colleges. I gained further experience through a GCSE English Language placement and then teaching GCSE English Language resits (again at College level).
Having successfully completed three degrees (BA Single Hons History, MSC Information and Library Management (PT, Pass, 2005, Bristol) and a PGCE, I bring my unique focus in supporting those with English as a Second or Other Language (ESOL) to academic proofreading. I am keen to offer the same service to small to medium local businesses too.
Before I started teaching I was an e-learning trainer and study skills promoter in various Further Education Colleges around Hampshire. These were mixed provision including degree level students, so I got to support and help everyone!
I work full-time term time only in an A-level College in Hampshire. My favourite lesson is A-level History - this is helping me to keep up to date with Routes B and C, as well as gaining further insights from great teachers.
As a female small business owner, I'm part of Abri's initiative for up-skilling start up business owners; the Coastal Collective and Women in Business.
Currently I teach age 11-12 through to adults. My experience is with College age students (14+) as an e-learning trainer for 17 years, then GCSE English Resits teacher (16+). I'm now teaching ESOL English to adults and Modern History to age 11-12 year olds.
My experience with supporting learners with Dyslexia came through my years of e-learning training and in academic proofreading. As an LSA I currently support a wide range of students which informs my tutoring.
I'm happy to try a younger age group (8-10 year olds)...but no younger as I am not experienced in this level of teaching. I also haven't had Chicken Pox so have to be careful around younger children because of this. Lessons are online too so this format really only works for older children...
My main experience has been in Colleges supporting the 16+ community. I'm very keen to develop confident independent learners. During the Pandemic I started tutoring a client aged 11 - they've been with me for two years now and re-discovered my love of of my subject and teaching History. As my degree is in History I can also support this level of study.
So Year 6-7 (11-12 years old) up to A-level and Bachelor degree...
Due to the ongoing Pandemic I've remained online. I can use Zoom, Teams or GoogleMeet. You can also book a lesson with me through Tutorful - they offer their own online classroom.
Lessons last an hour.
£25 please! You can pay me online (using PayPal or a bank transfer), or through the Tutorful website before the lesson if you book through Tutorful.
The first lesson will be shorter - 20 minutes... and free! This will be a quick chat to find out how I can help and what you'd particularly like out of the lessons.
Only if you ask for it! Homework can be set weekly after the lesson to continue your independent learning.
I will need to know in advance of our first lesson....your exam board, what you want to focus on and if we are working on developing work you've been set at school (i.e. a topic or essay questions).
All of it - our own times are fascinating. If I had to pick though, I really enjoy the Early Modern period - especially the 17th Century and the English Civil War. I studied this during my BA degree, including as part of my dissertation.
Please use the contact form in the Book A Lesson section.
Please make sure you cancel a lesson with 24 hours notice, otherwise you will be charged the full amount for the lesson.
If I need to cancel, I will give 24 hours notice and you won't get charged.

So GCSE and A-level, with a focus on English Literature. If you are looking to improve your English speaking and listening I can offer ESOL classes too!

If you're looking to improve your speaking and listening, I can deliver classes using British Council, BBC Learning English materials and amazing Mr WoodWard English videos.
Lessons are interactive and fun! I can't offer IELTS - I'm not qualified to teach it. I do have experience of ESOL using Trinity and City & Guilds from supporting ESOL classes in Colleges and with CLEAR Project.

Personally I've completed three degrees (BA Single Hons History; MSc in Information and Library Management and PGCE) - each one had different standards in terms of presentation, referencing and citations. Furthermore I've completed two theses - each one requiring a different citation system.
Through supporting A-levels and degree level students in their study skills (and offering proofreading for friends) I've become aware of the guidance needed and the common errors. My specialisms in supporting ESOL learners and a friend with Dyslexia in their Bachelor degree mean that I have a unique focus which I bring to proofreading.
Please don't confuse commercial essay writers, your tutor or anything else with a proofreader. A proofreader simply checks your work for errors in grammar, spelling and punctuation, structure (paragraphs, sentence lengths, tenses, singular/plural word usage) and may suggest corrections needed (areas of rewrite/clarification needed; words which need replacing because they don't promote easy or fluent reading).
Also I can advice on style and presentation (i.e. why headings are not a regular sentence and need to be treated differently!) as well as highlight terms which are culturally inappropriate or don't work effectively in academic writing.
I cannot rewrite sections, paragraphs, sentences for you - although I may provide an example to promote fluent reading.
I cannot proofread referencing or citations.
If I correct more than 30% of the document I cannot provide a 'clean' copy.
I cannot take payment before I've seen the document and we've agreed the word count and price.
Once the price is agreed I cannot re-negotiate the price (on average proofreading can take 4-5 hours for 10,000 words).
I cannot provide subject specific or detailed advice - however, if you let me know which terms are specific to your subject I will avoid checking them!
I will proofread the whole document apart from references and citations (so if you have lots of tables of data in the document - do let me know!)
Don't be surprised if the majority of your document needs work - this is working towards fluency and improved readability for the marker of your academic work. I can only highlight areas to work towards improving fluency and reading flow - it will sound more like a native English speaker, but not entirely (we have 48 hours!)
I cannot provide referencing or citation advice/guidance.
As I work full time in another role, I will need 48 hours to work on your document.
Complete the contact form and we can arrange dates/times/email contact.
Please make sure your document is in Word. Also make sure that you know if you are using American or British English and have your document set up correctly. I will check in British English unless you tell me otherwise - and there are a lot of differences!
When I get your completed form, I will send you a copy of my terms and conditions. If you're happy with what you've read, then you can go ahead and send me your document.
Once I've seen your document, and we've agreed the word count/dates/time needed to work on it. I would like 10% of the total price before I begin work on your document. Payment can be made by bank transfer or PayPal (£s sterling please). Once the work is complete, I will send you back the proofread document and you can pay me the outstanding amount online. I will provide acknowledgement by email of receipt of the 10% payment and an invoice for the main payment.
Please make sure that you are able to pay in £s online promptly and easily before signing up to my proofreading service.
In Word I use Track Changes and Comments to highlight areas you need to think about changing. The same word might get selected a lot!
But you are paying for a detailed and valuable service - a native English speaker, qualified to Masters level is checking your work over and making suggestions to improve its readability and fluency. It will read and sound similar to the style of a native English speaker once proofread, but not completely.
I cannot enter into dialogue about the suggestions I've offered - the proofreader corrects and suggests, the writer makes these changes. Your Supervisor/Tutor will offer the best advice. I am here to offer a time limited helpful service!
£15 per 1000 words
£10 for any extra words (a document is never a nice round number of words!)
£20 per 1000 words
£10 for any extra words (a document is never a nice round number of words!)
Service 2 will not cover any subject specific terms
As my work is all online, so long as our time zones match, anything is possible!
