THE ART OF COLLAGE
Fabric Collage
A fabric collage art quilt is the overlapping of multiple cut fabrics (glued or fused down) directly onto a background (fabric or batting) which creates a design that can be representational or abstract using an assortment of fabrics in different colors and of various sizes. The completed design can be further manipulated with the application of a variety of surface design techniques (other fibers, paints, embellishments, etc.) resulting in a unique, one-of-a-kind creative work of art.
To Let Go
To make a fabric collage is to embark on a journey of creativity which liberates you from yourself. It is a movement of surrendering your knowledge, what is certain, and embracing the unknown path ahead and trusting your innermost feelings and intuition. It is a journey of taking one step forward and allowing the play of that moment to guide you in the next direction. The collage process allows you to experiment freely and to explore different avenues. By doing so, you become more open and accepting of using different approaches. You become the follower of the creative spirit, taking the hand of your muse.
To OWN it
For me, collage opens new worlds and prompts me to become more fearless. It pushes the envelope of my fears. I have found that this process helps me to let go and grow, and most importantly it helps me to completely OWN my work as it is without the concern of what others might think of it. To unequivocally OWN our Art.

ARTIST STATEMENT: THE GREEN MAN'S CAT
THE GREEN MAN'S CAT is a tribute to our beloved bob-tailed cat, Buddy, who went missing in 2018. Buddy was all gray and had intense green eyes. He was a silent and solitary cat who loved the woods across from our house and would stay there all day and overnight, even in winter. He was the epitome of the pagan Green Man but as a cat who became one with his surroundings and who chose to live in harmony with nature.
A photo of Buddy was inspiration for this piece. I desired to capture his intense look and wanted his feline features to be apparent. The emphasis of yellow-greens, greens and blue-greens relays nature and gives further depth to the idea of woods. I designed all leaf elements and wanted all leaves to radiate from his body like European depictions of the pagan Green Man figure from the Middle Ages. The spirals and 'antlers' are a nod to Cernunnos, the ancient horned god of animals and nature in CeItic mythology. I used leaves of 10 different tree and plant species native to our area in central Florida and combined several leaf shapes to resemble deer antlers so to reveal Buddy's gentle nature but also to show how he blended with nature in his beloved woods.
Cats are great teachers about taking action. Buddy never hesitated and always acted on his impulses. His actions taught us to move on an opportunity and to do what you most love, so, during the 2020 Covid-19 spring quarantine, I lovingly created this fabric collage as a memento of him for my partner, Sam.

ARTIST STATEMENT: EARTH'S ECHOES
Every 30 seconds an earthquake occurs somewhere on our planet, with over a million tremors happening each year. Meanwhile, the echoes reverberate deep in the belly of Mother Earth revealing her primal nature. Vibrant and soulful is each vibration as the strongest echoes go the farthest, traveling thousands of miles through the hot fluid liquid core of her body.
I envision the natural elements simplistically and decided to use a one block pattern to portray the primal force essence of earth. Here, I use the traditional Tumbler block in a modern way with contemporary colors representing each echo.
