About Us
Midyat Assyrian/Syriac Cultural Association (Midyat Süryani Kültür Dernegi) was established in 2004 in relation to the reforms introduced within the context of Turkey’s EU accession process. The Midyat Syriac Association from the very beginning has aimed to preserve the culture and language of Assyrians/Syriacs still remaining in southeastern Turkey – Tur ‘Abdin region – and overall in Turkey. The Association has involved in several projects, most importantly EU financed (DG.ENLARG/B7-4036/TUR/01-2011) DELTUR project, aiming to raise awareness and promote the culture of this vanishing minority group.
The Association has 37 active official members in Midyat, consisting of 10 language teachers, and community stakeholders . The association is established according to the Turkish law on associations and has a well functioning board, financial and administrative structure. It has strong ties with the Assyrians/Syriacs remaining in the region (numbering ca 2,000) and Istanbul (ca 10,000) and has developed a network among the Turkish civil society organizations.
The Association has expertise and experience on topics related to culture and language of Assyrians/Syriacs.
