In creating the instruction manual I wanted to make sure that it followed UDL and AEM guidelines. When drafting the instructions I knew that I wanted to have multiple versions of it to make it more accessible for people with different needs. Currently there are three versions of the instructions the first is a pdf with OCR and alt text, the second is an audio recording where instructions are visible on the screen and read aloud, and the third version is a Spanish translation that also includes OCR, alt text, and visuals for materials.
AEM Principles
In each of the instructions I tried to make the instruction document have basic accessibility accommodations. Clear contrast between the text and the background, larger text, alt text and OCR so it could be read by a screen reader, and pictures for materials. These accommodations in addition to the version where the instructions are read aloud make it easier for people with visual impairments to understand the rules and materials. The instructions are written to be simple and straight forward as well as tell the user what cards to pick up when, what the colors of each deck are, and what to do with the cards once you are done with them. This allows the game to be more easily played and understood. The inclusion of video and audio formats of the instruction also allow people who struggle with deciphering text to be able to understand how to play the game.
UDL Principles
The instructions and the game itself were also created with UDL principles in mind. The game allows players to have elements of choice and customization by being able to choose your character, the environment, and the traits your character has. This directly engages with the principle of Recruiting Interest. The instructions and game itself have a Spanish version to allow ELL students be able to play. The adaptation cards also have visuals to help with decoding the text of the card. As well as the inclusion of a video and audio version of the instructions allow for different options for perception and navigation of the game materials.
