CONTEMPORARY

Contemporary literature refers to works of prose, poetry, and drama published since 1945. Precisely, it refers to postmodernism and what has come afterward. Contemporary literature reflets social and political viewpoints. 

REFLECTION

Contemporary period focus on post-colonialism and the legacy of those who occupy the Philippines at the early and middle period.  The modern period in the Philippines is often seen as having begun in the 1970s, following the Second World War. Rapid social, political, and economic upheaval, as well as the birth of new cultural forms and manifestations, have characterized this time. 

Contemporary period is divided onto three namely; contemporary, popular, and emergent literatures. Contemporary literature extend from 1960s-present. All literature until today are considered contemporary. Although, not all contemporary are popular and emergent literature even though they are under the same umbrella. Popular literature are literature with awards and most notable works of an author. Unlike contemporary, popular are enjoyed by the mass. Emergent on the other hand is difference because it takes advantage of technology. Contemporary literatures in early period do not utilize technology probably due to its inaccessibility at that time. 

The contemporary period in Philippine literature began in the 1970s after the Second World War. It is divided into three categories: contemporary, popular, and emergent literature. Popular literature is enjoyed by the masses and includes award-winning works. Emergent literature takes advantage of technology, which was not as accessible in the early days of the contemporary period.
